We paid for it and built it because we needed it, not out of kindness. We could have paid 10 times the cost and it still would have paid for its self in a heart beat. It did more for us than it did for Panama. And again, it is their country.

And to further show how much the Canal belonged to the US, anyone born in the Panama Canal Zone (those few hundred yards either side of the ditch) are treated as US Citizens/Nationals...only extended to those born prior to the turn over to the Panimanian Gov't.
