What made the "5" collection so famous?

Is it their top of the line line?

Are they still made?

I don't know the history of the "5" name but it is a very good watch. 21 or 23 jewels depending on the movement. It's not their top of the line. That would be the Grand Seiko which will set you back thousands. Next down from that would probably be their spring drive line, then the Kinetic.

Famous 5

It's a really solid watch and as a result got a very good rep in Asia. By US standards , it is not a very expensive watch, but your middle manager in Thailand or Pakistan would consider it pretty expensive.

My Citizen Nighthawk ecodrive just came in the mail the other day.. very cool very "powerful" watch...the black steel one costs about the same as the titanium one and more than the stainless steel one but it looks so much cooler.

It has a slide rule... though damned if I know how to use one or have a use for one.

I got it off of Amazon.com which surprisingly had the cheapest price at like $215 or so.

My first watch I bought maybe 3 months ago, a nice simple seiko: http://worldofwatches.com/detail.asp?Sn=456244486&dept_id=118&pf_id=4075&pageno=1&special=&watchsp= Of course I have already scratched the crystal... ntohing deep but still there. Anyone know what a crystal replacement costs, just out of curiosity? I bought it after I bought my father the Seiko that I promised I'd get him when I was 10 years old.

He asked me that after I get a first job that I buy him a Seiko watch, which he always wanted. I ended up getting him this http://www.watchzone.com/cgi-bin/watchzone.storefront/43d8844800011d6227430a80125305eb/Product/View/SGG711
I didn't think I'd ever get another one... hopefully this Citizen is the last! (sorry for all the links)

I looked at one of those black faced Seiko's they are nice watches but they don't make it in a white face or silver. It's funny I couldnt order the watch I wanted from a jewelry store i had to buy it on line.

What would you use a slide rule for?

They have some watches on here that are pretty cool but I think this is the neatest one I have seen.

I don't get the expensive watch thing. I like one that tells time and has a stopwatch function. I have also used the alarm function on occasion while travelling. I thought I was doing pretty good with the $20 Casio I bought at the Ft. Lewis PX a couple years ago, but I think Brian's our winner:

So, I stopped at the dollar store last week and, lo and behold, there are quartz "sport" watches for sale at $1.00 each.

I bought three of them. Best $3.00 investment I ever made.

Sure beats working on the M/B in a Rolex.

Well, I have an early '70s Accutron, but sorry, no I don't want to sell it...

Doggone, this thread made me remember that I have a small, eclectic collection:

My grandpa's cheap, but priceless Westclox Pocket Ben, in his pocket the day he died, that still sports a "Shoestring makes a fine watch chain!" feature. The hands have been rusted onto the dial face since they stopped in 1958.

An Ardath Reefmaster, a modest mechanical self-winder with day/date from the '60s that my dad wore every day until he died.

My red dial Bulova Accutron, from about 1973 or so. I keep a battery in this one and wear it now and then for fun.

A purely functional Timex Expedition Indiglo, not as cheap as Brian's finds, but it has the loudest tick in the world. I had to let the battery run down so it would no longer bother my wife...

Most often I get the time from my cellphone!

I have a Seiko 5 with a stainless case that I use when I go to the wrecking yard. After 25 years it still looks great.

A good mechanical watch is an Eternamatic which has not been sold here for about 40 years. I think they just make movements now. Eternamatic invented the self-winding watch, and the ETA movements you hear about are based on Eternamatic movements.

I have one that is about 50 years old. Still looks good and keeps great time. You can normally find one on ebay for less than $100.
