Buying a BMW
I have no idea what impulse has steered me towards aside from the fact that the jeep is waiting on some custom lift parts/not drivable. And the TD is waiting on a slow as F$#@ insurance settlement. I found a 89 750iL in pristine condition about $1500 back of wholesale book. I am wondering if anyone knows of a bimmer forum as good as mercedesshop.

Doubtful someone can direct you to a BMW forum as good as this one. However, on any BMW forum you will find many telling of the problems of the early 12 cylinder engine.

A cheap 750il might not be such a bargain
Hi,
www.roadfly.com might be a good place to start. But remember the ditty about them? No matter how hard I sweat and toil I still can't afford a 750il They are great fast cruisers when all is right with them, but they have fearsome electrical problems and the 750 engine is not the best of the bunch either, actually they have a reputation as real money pits. Be VERY careful here!!! Parts are not cheap, Their desirability is reflected in their resale. I think you are well off looking elsewhere, for another sporty quick sedan, unless you buy it for a few laughs, drive it for about a year, don't put anything into it, then sell it, after you had some fun with it Just my opinion.

Not a big 750 fan myself. Love the 7 series with the other engines, but the M120 is just leaps and bounds better then BMW's 12 of that era.

Good grief, run away....I'm afraid of the complexity of MB and BMW V12's...I have enough trouble with V8's. I was told that on the BMW V12, they basically siamesed 2 inline 6's, and instead of making one engine management copmputer, just took the existing 'puters for the 6's and added one that made them talk to each other, so instead of potential trouble with 1 system, now you have 3 that can crap out. There is a reason old V12's are so cheap. Look at Jag XJS's too...can't give them away because they are so complex and difficult to deal with.

Isn't that the car/engine where someone dedicated a webpage on how expensive and a lemon of a car it became? I'm pretty sure it is that model.... I would think 2 or 3 times before making that purchase.

Well if you buy an old one what do you expect. I can see complaining if you bought it when it was pretty new.
But some of those people bought 750IL's for a few thousand bucks when they were 12+ year old cars. Then go nuts when they have to pay someone $7k to fix it? Hello you just bought a $100k car, what do you expect? There second mistake was buying a car like that and paying someone to work on it.

I have a friend with a later model 750iL. He says he wishes he could offload the car, but no one wants to buy it.
And I have the window sticker and the original finance agreement with my SL. It was $119,234 new after the options and adjustments.... Good Grief.

had that urge once
A while ago (pre diesel life) I was jonesing on a 12 cylinder car. The BMW and Jags were high on the target list. A friend of mine said it best..."lay down until the feeling passes".
In a second rendition of discussing BMW 750's, another friend recounted how he knew a service manager for a BWM dealership. He mentioned those cars had some remarkable number of "little electric servo motors" in the passenger compartment. The number I seem to remember is 70. Keeping them all running was near impossible. The number may be an exaggeration, probably not the abilty to keep 100% working. Good luck with your choice. Hope it works out well. Chuck |

I'll bet someone could make some money by leasing various 12 cylinder cars on a weekly or monthly basis. All these guys wanting one could get their fill. Course, they'd probably beat the hell our of it.
