Got Ma in to see Dr. Oh on Wednesday and learned that the MRI comparison done at the ER was looking at Saturday's scan vs. the last scan done at Frederick Memorial - back when they first found Ma's brain tumors. So the "no change in size" finding really should have been "they've grown back to the same size they were before the radiation treatments." In other words: 2 to 10 times bigger than they were two months ago (that MRI having been done elsewhere meant Fred Mem didn't see it Saturday in the ER).

"Partial seizures" (Saturday's twitching), increase in passive aggressive behavior, even less leg strength, balance is shot, confusion and memory issues - all getting more pronounced by the day - are all tied to the tumors pushing on various bits in Ma's head. She started another round of chemo yesterday - Doc Oh says there is a 50% chance this cocktail will affect the tumors.

Laid awake 'til just before the sun came up, holding Darling Wife while she quietly sobbed. Ma is really excited about Thanksgiving. Meridythe isn't sure she'll recognize us by then.
Crap, sorry to hear that. Continued thoughts and prayers for you an yours.

One day, one hour, one minute at a time has it's advantages.

Got Ma out to Joanie's tonight - multiple hours hanging with wonderful, loving, happy friends. Ma loved the attention - chatting with folks her own age, her age + decades, her age minus multiple decades. Nothing forced, nothing fake, nothing other than real people talking to someone who they found worth talking to.

Home now, Barb & Louis down from CT, Sepha from the Lutheran church next town over is here as well. Bottle o' port, bottle o' red, occasional tap into the bottle o' 151. Eclipsing three in the ayem, sitting here exploring everybody's ipod collections, fun links, and overall general silly and sweet and bitter and amazing and cherished memories.

Crying to Big & Rich singing 8th of November, dancing to Gypsy Kings, giggling at Barb's silly boy band music.

Life has it's challenges. Life has it's rough spots. Life has it's wonder, joy, love, happiness, and amazement.

Life is good. Friends, family (however you define family), and the experiences they bring are beyond compare. I am truly blessed.

Realize it's still Thursday for most of you, but it's Friday here; my apologies for starting this week's Friday check in this way, but I need to type or scream or cry more than I can before the driver plucks me out of the f'n Malaysian hotel, so you guys 'win'.

Just got off the phone with Darling Wife. Ma's tumors are not responding to the new chemo. We're into make Ma comfortable mode, calling all family to Maryland.

As so succinctly put by our dear friend Barb: cancer is an *******.

Sorry to hear about Ma, ramonajim...

May you get home in time to be with all before anything more transpires...

I'll be thinking of you and yours this season...I have "an idea" of what may be going on, but even when you've been through it yourself, you never really know how the others truly feel...you have a feeling, but that's about it...

Again, my thoughts will be about you and yours...

I'll go on about my week later... Now's not the time...

$h!t. So sorry to hear that, Jim. Our thoughts and prayers will be with Meridythe, yourself and your family.

It's never easy and never a good time, but my MIL passed away from the aforementioned @$$hole Dec. 10, 2004. The holidays are still an incredibly tough time for my wife since that was her mom's time to shine (stereotypical Sicilian woman putting out the stereotypical Italian-American Thanksgiving/Christmas spread-that is a 24 course meal starting at 8AM consisting of everything). Try your best to cherish Ma's remaining time, especially if she's still pretty aware. My MIL turned for the worst almost overnight and I think my wife still carries some regrets for not letting her mom know how she really felt about her when she saw her a couple days prior, when she was still up and about and completely there mentally. You know, the stuff above and beyond the thanks and love.

I spent all afternoon training new recruits. Amazing!

I've only been here for a few months.

Now Saturday morning, in Singapore. Waiting for my flight to Tokyo, then on to home.

Thanks all for putting up with my vent (and the thoughts, words, and prayers), and please don't hold back on your own stories on my account. Hearing about everyone else's day to day helps keep me grounded.....

I love my job and the people I work with are terrific. You really appreciate that after you're worked for a dirt bag in an office full of mean-spirited, lying, theiving bums for twenty years.

. . . or so I've been told.

Life is good!

Happy "Black Friday" everyone...

( What a strange name for a day...I realize it's for "black ink" in the retail world, but couldn't they have come up with something a little less "dark" or foreboding? )

Am I heading out to stress in the malls and shopping centers of this great nation?

Hell, no...I'm taking my yet-to-be-monikered new arrival for a 3-digit run up and down the east and west side of the Mississippi today...maybe up to Minnenipples and then over to Wausau, then back to Hudson and then follow the river south...or I'll reverse the route and stay at a Comfort Inn overnight...I'm not quite sure what I want today...but, I'll let the head decide when I get behind the wheel.

Maybe I'll see a few of you on the road...

I'll *toot* when I see ya'!

Got wheelchair ramps built and primed yesterday, too cold to put the non-slip paint on 'em today. Getting house cleaning done with Darling Wife, finally got around to putting a dead bolt on the front door (barn door, after horse routine - Daphne the Wonder Doodle let herself out for a romp around town this morning since whoever was last out the front door didn't slam it quite hard enough to latch), got a monster grocery list to work through after the boys arrive....

The Boys - Ma's second cousin 18 times removed or something like and his husband of 20+ years. Ma doesn't know they're flying out from California - this is one of the big surprises for her this weekend. Head count for Sunday is now up to 25+, and Ma is in great shape as of right now, except for suspiciously low white blood cell count this morning.

Spent a couple hours last night with Ma, Darling Wife, and dear friend Barb going through a giant box of old pictures - dating back to when Ma was a reporter for the Post and a budding photographer. Lots of naked baby pics of Darling Wife and her twin brother led to all manner of wholly inappropriate dirty jokes - that only got dirtier when we found the pictures of Darling Wife at 16, 17, and 18 (not nekkid pix, but most enjoyable all the same).

One hour at a time, giggling when we can, working when we have too. Best of the holidays to all of you and all of yours.
