Heard that Jimmy put to 'page' every lick from the first four albums before the first one was released... in a way those guys will always be untouchable.

I have to get in here.....

Love this thread. So much talent, so little room to type

Alex Lifeson of Rush. Freewill, Xanadu, Limelight, to name a few and the solo in Kid Gloves off of "Grace Under Pressure" The "Signals" album had one of my favorites from the song Analog Kid.

Tom Sholtz from Boston. I read the Brad Delp thread and remembered all the great songs and solos...

Dave Murray and Adrianne Smith from Iron Maiden. So many great dueling guitar solos......

Jake E. Lee had to follow up Randy Rhodes in "Bark at the Moon" There were some great songs and solos....

I am a big Dave Mustane fan from Megadeth. Especially with Chris Poland on the "Peace Sells but Who's Buying"

Flame Suit on.....Just for fluff, CC Deville from Poison had a few great solos. Yes the make up and weird hair.....I know, I know but the solo in "Every Rose has It's Thorns" was very good...

Everyone mentioned before I agree 100%. Cheers!

Shaun

Bingo! I put my subconscious mind to work all evening on that and now here it is! And I thought I was psychotic.....
Great solo. In fact, to me that IS the song. Take the soaring guitar part away and it sounds good but not the same.

Back in the days, I liked Hendix's "Little Wing" also Stevie Ray's version.
And Steve Hunter's intro to "Sweet Jane" on Lou Reed's live Rock 'n Roll Animals concert.

EC's version is not too shaby either....

Can I hear a Duanne Allman from some of you good 'ol southern boyzzz

There is maybe no sweeter song than Mountain Jam from Live at The Filmore

with Duanne & Dickey B. playing note for note guitar lick harmonies together.....

Yep, they are still untouchable, IMO. I don't see another rock band ever reaching the same lofty heights. Their stuff still sounds fantastic today - even better considering the technology artists have at their disposal today. Imagine if Zeppelin circa early 70s had access to the same tools?

Actually...maybe it is better they did not. They had to use skill and imagination to do what they did. Sometimes the best tools can be a crutch.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but....

One of the best guitar leads EVER has to be Brian May's solo at the end of Queen's "We Will Rock You". Amazing tone, perfectly melodic, perfectly tasteful, not too long, not too short... and it just f***in' rocks.

Mike

Must have listened to the "Yessongs" album several hundred times since it came out in `72.

Tom Sholtz's intro to "Long Time" on Boston's debut album is bloody solid.

Not the most technically difficult solo by a long stretch, but I don't care about difficulty. I just want something that sounds good, and that sounds GOOD>

He has that ragged out old Stratocaster and his solos really "fit" instead of overshadowing the song.
The more I think about it the more great ones I think of. Brian May (rumor was he used a quarter for a pick), Eddie Van Halen (have you SEEN him lately? He looks like Keith Richards' brother), Alvin Lee, Peter Frampton....
My favorite solo is probably a Pink Floyd song (I can't think of the title right now). It's slow and soulful and fairly long and has a great guitar solo.
Chuck.
Alvin Lee is an absolute stand out, so is Johnny Winter ...!

What got me is a statement from ZZTop Guitarist Billy Gibbons: In the old days their amps were so screwed up, that´s where the sound came from. Later, with all the equipment new, they had to "imitate" themselves ....
