HA!

The pvr v6 was an interesting engine in its day. I had one in my 76 volvo wagon. The bottom end of the motor had a main bearing girdle built into its oil pan with a low sump not unlike a benz. The girdle was not unlike the one in a cosworth indy engine of the day.

That engine was the basis of the 1000 hp F1 turbo engines of the day. It could take a lot of modificaions.

Stock, though the oiling to the ohc was a little suspect and damaged cams were very common unless you changed the oil very very often. I did mine every 2500 IIRC and had no trouble up til about 125K when my wife pulled out in front of a large buick (or something similar).

The little volvo stepped smartly with the torquey v6 and the odd fire configuration made a nice moaning sound under full throttle.

The Deloren needed about half again as much power to sell well, maybe double. If they had offered a turbo version it might have done better.

This is the first I have heard it was fiberglass with a ss skin. That would account for the weight.

Even the non-cat 170hp was too low.

There is a company that installs Cadillac Northstar V8's into Deloreans. Going from 135 to 300 HP should perk the ol' girl up.

If they had a tight fit with a V6 before, how would they cram a V8 into it?

Contrary to universally accepted belief they were NOT stainless steel bodies.

The body shell was actually fibreglass with a thin stainless veneer. This accounts for the misalignment common among the doors and hoods of high mileage and/or hard driven examples.

The engine is quite large for a V6, with a V8-like 90-degree angle between the cylinder banks instead of the more common 60-degree angle.

I always thought that he had used Buick 3.8 liter engines running with a 2bbl carb instead of fuel injection. You learn something new every day on this board!

I read that the "Back to the Future" guys dropped Porsche engines in their cars. No wonder Marty could get rubber! I am now thinking about a nice DMC with a 928 engine in it...

The stainless body and fiberglass pan -- they had the right idea, they just used too much junk components... and he had to be on coke when he picked the engine.

I'd rather a Bricklin. I remember sitting in a new Safety Orange example in the local Buick/Pontiac/Bricklin dealer and thinking what a cool car that was. Depending on the year, they were equipped with either a AMC 360 or Ford 351. They were built like tanks, but like most low-production cars, a little underdeveloped, so things would tend to fall off in your hands.

For the kind of money they want for them you can get a number of good mid engined cars. Like Ferrari 308/328's, or a Honda NSX.

For $60k I'd rather get an NSX, its just a better car in all regards.

I have one. I have heard that Deloren worked for a brief time at Bricklin. Some drawings on Gullwing doors disapeared. The AMC powered ones had about 225 HP. Pretty good for the times. The 351W had about 178HP, still good for mid to late 70's and into the early 80's. The Corvette of the time had about the same performance. The Bricklin has fiberglass panels with an acrylic sheeting over it. There is a foam layer between the two. The panels warp with temperture changes. The doors were originally hydrualic powered by a '64 Lincoln pump. There are conversions for pneumatic operated doors. Much better. When mine was hydraulic, It took some time for the doors to go up and down. I usually had about 2-3 tries to get it started.

He he he...the polished stainless is nice...but I plan on using it as a daily driver. That polished stainless is just begging for trouble with Johnny Law. If it turns out that the motor is toast...I'll be dropping a GM L67 into it...3.8L SC'd V6. either that or a Buick GN turbo motor.

The motor in that is an all aluminum v6....pretty light, with the engine slung out behind the diff like a corvailr or porsche 911. Putting a big iron engine in there is asking for trouble, imho.

It is gonna wanna push at the limit anyway.

The Northstar is approximately 80 lbs. heavier than the PRV. Could be enough to give a problem.

For a lot of years I had a D'Tamasso Pantera. It was also a very under developed car. It did however have a big block Ford in it. It was mid engined and would move at about a 160mph top speed. Because of the torque and gearing the car also ran a very respectable quarter mile time. It didn't really handle worth a damn, and was comparable to Mustang handling of the day. Maybe a hair better, because of it's mid engine. I'd buy another Pantera, before ever spending the same amount on a Delorean. They can actually be had these days for less than Delorean, if you look around a little. I sold mine for $47k (Which was actually a very high price for the car)four years ago. It was a very low mileage, and almost flawless car. It had a full body kit, with huge 13 inch wide rear tires, and fender flares front and rear. The car looked pretty sick, but wasn't as fast and agressive as it appeared to be. The looks of some cars are truely deceiving sometimes. I was satisfied with the gained space in the garage, and filled it with an 81 300CD, as soon as I had the chance..
