Question Who makes the best interior paint?

I just painted two rooms in my new condo in preparation for moving in this Saturday. Yeah, it's going to snow all day Friday too!

I used Gliddon and was pleased with it. It took two coats, though.

Just curious: who makes the best paint for interior painting?

Just had almost every room in my house painted last month by a pro. He used Glidden.

Shot it with a paint compressor for even coverage and less paint waste.

Since the rooms were all painted "eggshell" originally, one coat is all it took.

You've got quite a challenge if you are trying to do "beige" on a room formerly done in "burgundy"...

Benjamin Moore is one of the favorite stains around here, but most high end painters I know use Sherwin Williams.

Sherwin Williams does make good paint. I did my last house in Ralph Lauren and used some of the "faux effects". It can be a bit foppish, but if you do it right it really does look great.

A friend of mine did the "suede look" using RL...said it was kinda expensive, as the paint was already pricey, and it took a lot of coats to achieve the effect.

His first effort looked marginal, so he went back to the store to ask for tips, and after the second pass, it looked great!

Hey - any current thinking about this?

My painter says he prefers Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams, and between the 2, he'll let me decide. (His quote includes the paint.)

We'll be doing an off-white eggshell for a 2 story interior space with a lot of natural light - 2 coats.

I know there's lots of other brands, but let's stick to these 2.

Thanks
Al

ANY paint will do well, provided that the prepatory work was done properly...

Trying to cover over a dark color with a lighter tone/color?

Use a lighter colored primer first, then a second coat of primer that's even lighter toned than the first, then your color of choice.

But, be aware that you may need a second coat of your color of choice. It just works out that way, sometimes.

A good "paint mix store" (SW or BM) will listen to what you want to do and try to match your final "idea" on sample pieces to see if it's feasible.

Our local SW did exactly that for me and the results were what I needed.

Also, pay particular attention to what's required for the prepatory work...any "shortcuts" there and you could be looking at a very expensive "redo" on a job you just hated thinking about doing the first time...and now you may have to do it again?

Good luck!

I hate Ralph Lauren paint. It's watery, doesn't mix well; a real PITA to use.
I used the Home Depot stuff, Behr Premium Plus, on my parents' last house and it worked pretty well. Durable too.

A lot of brands get their pain from the same source. A name brand is good, if you don't buy the cheapo line. High dollar crap like Ralph Lauren is a waste of money.

A lot of paints are dominant in different regions too. Nothing to be said about quality, but about distribution channels.

The Behr is horrible paint for the price. It won't cover anything but the same color in one coat. If you go that route, you might as well use the Wal-Mart paint. It's $10. less per gallon and does the same job. I've used it for 10 years with no real issues (I don't cover burgundy with off-white).

Benjamin Moore is definitely a premier paint if you can stomach the cost.

I buy a lot of the expensive line of paint from Ace. I don't know who makes it, but it covers quite well (assuming a properly prepared and primed surface).

Pratt & Lambert used to be a favorite of my stepfather's (he is a pro).
I've had good luck with Behr so far. I had lousy coverage with a Glidden paint, except for a type of theirs specifically for door trim - it was rather thick, but covered well.

I think a lot of times, it depends on what kind of paint (gloss, semi-gloss, eggshell, satin, flat, and whatever else they've come up with) you are using.

Larry: Could you check with him on recent experiences with it?

I have used P&L and Benj Moore exclusively in the past, and the P&L was my favorite. When I mentioned P&L to my painter, he said the quality has declined. I have one room I want to go over in the original P&L color (light blue eggshell).

Thanks
Al

As I mentioned, my quote includes paint cost, and I'm not going to 2nd guess my painter (to avoid troubles later). He's giving me the choice of Sherm Will or Benj Moore, altho I'm sure I can convince him to use P&L on the one room that's a re-paint in the same color.

I'll be using off-white eggshell on the rest of the house, and it's going over an original light color (Benj Moore) oriental silk.

And to combine two of my interests....

This blonde decides one day that she is sick and tired of all these blonde jokes and how all blondes are perceived as stupid, so she decides to show her husband that blondes really are smart.

While her husband is off at work, she decides that she is going to paint a couple of rooms in the house. The next day, right after her husband leaves for work, she gets down to the task at hand.

Her husband arrives home at 5:30 and smells the distinctive smell of paint. He walks into the living room and finds his wife lying on the floor in a pool of sweat. He notices that she is wearing a ski jacket and a fur coat at the same time. He goes over and asks her if she is ok.

She replies yes.

He asks what she is doing.

She replies that she wanted to prove to him that not all blonde women are dumb and she wanted to do it by painting the house.

He then asks her why she has a ski jacket over her fur coat.

She replies that she was reading the directions on the paint can and they said....

FOR BEST RESULTS, PUT ON TWO COATS.
