Even pessimistic economists project that the system can stay solvent for several more decades with only relatively minor adjustments. I don't pretend to understand those calculations, but they seem to be accepted by people on both sides of the issue. It's been going great for 70 years, lets keep it going another 30 and then see where we stand.
One change that they should, but probably won't make, is to apply a means test for recipients. If you make more than "x" amount per year from anything other than work, then you don't get SS. That would be just a little more of that socialism that I like so much.

Seriously, though, means testing seems like a good idea to me.
