How much weight can you put in the trunk of a 1980 300SD

I bought a 1972 220D last weekend the engine is out of the car, do yall think I could transport the engine in the trunk of my 1980 300SD the engine is down to a long block. I would put plywood in the trunk to support the engine. Also do you think it would be ok to use my 300SD with a tow dolly to tow the car home? I would be making 2 trips 1 for the car and 1 for the engine. I have always had a truck in till now.

My guess is that the engine would not be a real issue, but be sure you support it well underneath. It is amazing how little metal is there in the trunks of our cars. My pal and I cut up a W123 awhile ago and you could pick up the trunk section very easily.

I'm not too sure I would tow that hulk with the 300SD. Seems too heavy to me.

My concern with towing would be exhaust gas temps. If you can monitor the EGTs and moderate the throttle to keep them safe, it might be OK. The concern is that towing requires more throttle, and more boost, and therefore higher EGTs.

RLeo took my old 1976 240D from my home in Houston to Austin on a tow dolly, pulled by a W123 300TD. I don't think he had much of a problem. The hard work for him was disconnecting the driveshaft.

Reckon the engine weighs about 600 lbs oughta not be problem. W116 are light in the rear anyhow.

Most full sized cars are rated at 4 adults at 150lbs and 200lbs in the trunk as a general rule of thumb.

Putting most of that load in the trunk is going to bury the rear suspension and make the front end light which is going to make it extremely twitchy.

Rent a budget rental car 1/2 ton pickup for $19.99 a day and do it in one trip instead.
