I've actually been doing pretty good. Down to a tick over 264. If I was trying to quit smoking I'd be well over 285 with all the snacking.

Talking about smoking.....I bet most people don't know that Obama is a smoker.

I wonder if he'll pick up eating jelly beans like Reagan did if he wins.

Day two: Slid a bit last night but still going forward. Feeling really strange. Got to make it through this week!

Way back in the primaries, he claimed his wife made him quit "sneaking the occasional cigarette" before he registered on the ballot.

Yep, and I also have read that reporters have noted that he still sneaks the occasional cigarette when his wife's not around.

Sounds familiar. I think I did that for some 30 odd years.

Slid a bit? You have to understand that you cannot have another cigarette for the rest of your life. If you think you have the habit licked in a few days and sneak one, you've lost and you'll probably wind up right back where you were.

And yes, you've got to make it through this week, because next week will likely be worse. After two weeks, it gets a lot better.

But I suppose it depends on how bad your addiction is. These folks who talk about sneaking one now and then were probably never very addicted in the first place. To me, my lit cigarette was as important a part of my body as my fingers.

You're right. I've now switched from the lozenge to the patch. I didn't like the fact that I couldn't eat or drink within 15 minutes of using the lozenge. Day three: so far, so good.

Don't start 'conditional' smoking. My father in law smoked heavily, and in an effort to quit resorted to just smoking in bathrooms. So he would stink up our bathroom (towels, toothbrushes, etc) whenever he came to visit.

My mother used to do that, too. I told her that she didn't have to sneak around like a kid, smoking in the bathroom. If she was going to stink up the house, just sit there with the rest of us and smoke. It was pretty comical.

Role reversal from when I was a kid and not supposed to be smoking.

There will be no "conditional" smoking. It's all or nothing for me.

Hang in there! I quit in ’92. I smoked up to 3 packs of Camel filters per day until I quit. I did it cold turkey. It was intensely difficult. Having a nicotine substitute will help you avoid many problems related to sudden nicotine withdrawal.

If at all possible start an exercise routine to help clear out your lungs. Start by doing a simple 1/4th mile walk every day. Work up from there. When you’re comfortable start doing some aerobic exercise. Work up gradually and don’t beat yourself up in the process. The slow and steady gain in physical fitness will go a long way to off set the negative effects of quitting.

Not unrelated, I owe the fact that I have heart disease – 3 partial blockages -- to my former smoking habit.
