I can’t help but think that there has to be video of that.
Perhaps on a security camera.

With all those people and buildings, I’d think someone got that on tape.

Maybe that's why we have yet to hear from BC.
He's heading to the AP to collect his retirement check.

Lots of pics on Flickr and Twitter:

Just looking at the folks waiting to be rescued makes me feel cold.

You forgot one thing...It'll take a few days to replace ALL the seats in that thing...even the Pilots' chairs...

Naw..
They just velcro in.
And it looked like most were out (floating down the river) already.

You're right though. I'd bet there were plenty of folks needing that quick dunk in the river to rinse out some shorts.

Looks like it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. And what a retirement plum for him. He'll be in high demand in the safety ed. biz that he'd been working on on the side for some time.

They said he walked the aisle twice. I bet the second time he was just about giddy at the fact that everyone was safely off.

Oh man, that's the video that got away.

Would that mean one round trip? Or two?

Can't tell you. I'm guessing two round trips. Wouldn't want to spoil such a good outcome by missing someone lying on the floor.

Citizen and Police rescue time

Note the response time of the Ferry boat Captains and the Police Harbor team and the total cooperation of the passengers and an A1 top notch US Air crew.
1) the Pilot and Co pilot had 35,000 flicght hours between them, co pilot was a former Command pilot who downgraded when US Air cut back and took the right seat job to keep his pension. Pilot was the best you could want in the situation, 6 year USAF, 19 year US Air, 40 year Glider pilot and from what I have heard a stellar individual all around.
2)Cabin crew were all Senior Attendants (50+) and the first passengers steppped onto the wing 27 seconds after the plane stopped moving!
3)NYC Harbor folks are the best. The NY Waterways crews have saved several folks from drowning and aided the cops numerous times. Helicopter went in the East River 3 years ago and ferryboat crew and bystanders saved everyone before the cops got there.
4)NYPD Harbor Patrol on site in 6 minutes. Divers in the water in 8 minutes dropped from a chopper (no tanks just a snorkle and fins).

We here in NYC may be looked at as being rough, crude and unyielding but we do have the BEST folks when it comes to First Responders!

If you are going to have something like this happen, NYC is the place and our folks are the best out there!

I feel like the newspaper put the kiss of death on this. Today I was reading the NY Post in the Doctors office and they had an article about how safe airlines have been for the past 2 years and how little accidents their have been. Right after I put down the paper I thought to myself."Well thats great now we will have one within the next week or so"

Like all the others here, I congradulalte the pilots, and I will have an adult beverage in their honor.

Other observations---This happened in NYC. You folk who think it'll be back in the air in a couple of days forgot to include the vandalism on the plane. Tires were probably striped before all the passengers got off. The stero was also probably ripped off, quickly.

#2--Of course they safely landed the plane--Any other outcome would have detracted from Obama weekend! At least with the NYT it would have been buried on page 6 or so.

Hats off to the pilot! Couldn't have picked a better place to do it either, lots of river traffic on the scene in a hurry.

I believe it's still speculation, but it sounds like an open season on Canada geese might be in order? As if making a $hit-zone around every small body of water weren't enough reason to cull the flocks.

Bouyancy

Since it happened I have wondered what kept this plane afloat. I heard this morning about some sort of "water - ___" system that the plane was equipped with. They didn't explain it, other than saying it helped keep the plane from sinking.

I know that the fuel is lighter than water and if not all the tanks were filled with fuel, they are charged with CO2 or some other inert gas. And there were likely some air pockets in the cargo hold, but the plane still apparently still has some bouyancy tied to the pier.
How? WVO or anyone know the systems or principles in play here?

I'm sure WVO knows more about this than I do but I heard the plane was equipped with a "ditch-switch" - this is a single switch that the pilot can toggle and the plane will instantly close all the valves that could vent water into the cabin. In a conventional plane these valves have to be closed manually via a check-list procedure - not a great plan when you have 1 minute from bird hit to water touchdown.
