That is because Packard died in 1958

What you have pictured is a Clipper, the "Chevy" of Packards. Nice cars, but the low range from the company.

*** USELESS TRIVIA ALERT ***

Packard bought Studebaker in 1954. Studebaker basically lied about how solvent the company was and the deal was done. It was only later that the Packard acountants found out that the break even point for Stude was not an additional 20,000 cars, but an additional 200,000 cars! Studebaker sucked the life out of Packard and Packard itself went out of the car business in '58 leaving Studebaker to lurch along until 1965!

Two interesting things about this company. They entered into an agreement with Daimler Benz in 1958 to import Mercedes and was the exclusive importer until MBUSA was formed in 1966.

Studebaker-Packard also owns/owned these companies
  • D.W. Onan & Sons - Generators
  • Cincinnati Testing Labs - Plastics Research
  • Gering Plastics - Plastics Manufacture
  • Clarke Floor Machine Company - Fork Lifts, etc.
  • Gravely Tractors - Quality lawnmowers
  • Chemical Compounds Company - Maker of STP additives
*** END ALERT ***

I know, I know, it's not a 1959. But for fifties luxo barges nothing beats a 1955 Mark II IMHO

As an icon of the fifties, an elegant and understated car as the MkII , has no place.
As a piece of rolling automotive sculpture, however, it is timeless in its simplicity. Its extremely difficult to design a car as large as the MkII and have it so clean.

Cadillac Sedan DeVille 4dr (roundtop) - simply because it looks the most outrageous.

The late '50's MOPARS,with Exner's Forward Look had the best styling and engineering of any big three offerings. The Caddy by comparison looks like a yclept greenhouse heavy assemblage with the tailfins grafted on as an afterthought.

Why can't they remake these with stainless frames, fiberglass bodies, and modern EFI engines?

Ick...

I would take EFI but fiberglass? Ewww.

You need to have STEEL and lots of it to make one of these cars!
Drop in a new engine and a modern transmission and disc brakes and you have got something.
