The SEC was a "Beverly Hills Volkswagen"

The night I bought the SEC as certified preowned from the Mercedes dealer in Orange County near Disneyland, back in 1996, an old registration card fell out of an old Nokia portable phone handbook. It listed a corporate address on Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills.

On a hunch and a whim, a month later, I flew back to LA and went to that address in BH without an appointment, and hit paydirt after walking in there wanting to ask questions about the car.

The car had belonged to the man that had owned the Beverly Hills Hotel, (before the ARABS bought the place) and he told me all about the car, and presented me with a sheaf of service records from Beverly Hills Mercedes Benz and other shops he had used..

He said the only reason he disposed of it was that his 27 y o wife complained "It was too flashy for Beverly Hills" and so he got rid of it and bought her a new BMW...

I have the entire complete history of the car, everything, from April 1992 to today.

Few 18 year old cars can boast of that.

Wouldn't work real well for me.

The PO of my 450SLC is a rather notorious former hedge fund manager.

He is currently a guest of the Feds.

I suppose I could drop by, but I bet he's got other stuff on his mind, such as avoiding picking up soap in the shower.

This topic always intrigued me also. I had a guy stop here at the shop once who had a 72 H2 Kawasaki that I once owned and thought that was kind of neat. I would LOVE to see what happened to most of the cars I have owned since they were all pretty much unique vehicles.

Exclamation CALL HAS BEEN MADE!!!!!!!!!!!

I finally was able to call not 10 minutes ago and the reaction was positive!!!!!

The owners son "Roger" listed two numbers so I tried the first but it didn't work, so I tried the second but it just went to voicemail. I thought I'd give it one last try and tried the first number again and it started ringing! My heart was beating 1000 times a second while it was ringing and a woman answered the phone.

I asked for "Roger" but she said he wasn't in, and asked if she could take a message. I asked her if she remembered the 220D, she did so I told her that I now have it and that it's in good hands and all that good stuff. She said "Oh my goodness that's so nice of you! Thank you!" and said Roger had just walked through the door and she put him on.

I then told him the whole thing again and he told me it was his dads and that it was "his baby" and that it was nice to know it's being taken care of, and that he hopes I get many years out of it. I'm so happy that they were cool about it and stuff! whoooooooo! I told him also "I wish I could thank your dad for keeping it in such great condition" and he seemed really grateful. Now I just want to take it to the guy who sold it to us to show him it's running and then drive it to it's original home: Mecca, California. What an experience lol

I know this is an old thread, but after looking for cars for sale all night the other night, I was bored and decided to go through the 220's Owners Manual and receipts and stuff... I've never been able to figure out the exact address of the house it lived at its whole life because the PO put a PO Box for everything, but he slipped up and I caught it

I was looking at a Battery "Owner's Service Certificate and Warranty Manual" and saw the address!!! Finally!! lol So I'm going to just drive by and go see the house my car lived at for 37 years.. I'll be tempted to knock on the door but I'm almost 100% sure the wife either passed away or doesn't live there anymore, but we'll see. That would be cool if she still did though, in a perfect world, she would live there be all happy I came by to show her it.. Tell me all about it and where it's been and maybe even some pictures of when it was new. -__-

Interesting thread! It seems that most previous owners are open to the idea of seeing their old cars. I had the opposite experience with one of my MB's . I called the original owner of my 1987 560SEL (in MINT condition) about the paperwork problems I was having. (It had already passed through an auction house, and two owners, but was still in his name!!) and he was an extremely argumentative older asian guy, asking where I had gotten his number, and basically told me that he didn't care at all to help me. When in reality I was trying to help him, by telling him that this car was still a liability to him. I guess he didn't care and hung up on me after about three minutes. Oh well.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your original owner He sounded like a jerk and it's a good thing that the car is in your hands instead of his! Yeah it seems PO's are generally cool about new owners calling, I know I would be!
