Nor did he use his seniority in the Senate for the purpose of making himself more powerful, although he did become very powerful. Perhaps some of you who know more about him can tell me why I am wrong, but I believe he was there to serve. He constantly did good deeds without seeking publicity for it. He seemed like an uncommonly decent person.

Perhaps it is my Catholic upbringing, but I believe in redemption. I think Ted Kennedy did a lot to redeem himself after the terrible thing he did to Ms. Kopechne.

Thanks for the post. One of the best on the thread.

Only thing a Kennedy was ever good for is naming some public building after their "untimely" demise. Good riddance to the fat ba$tard. RT

His dog is/was a Portuguese water dog. Perhaps he used to play fetch with him by throwing a stick in a lake or some other body of water. Some dogs dig the hell out of that.

In light of that, naming him splash doesn't seem that weird. Might have been a name to avoid but I doubt very much that he was trying to mock the accident.

But hey, I know people love to jump to most hateful conclusion if it's a liberal pol involved.

Ted was a great man who did what he thought was great things. No matter if you agree with what he did or not you have to admire that. I'm not sure any of us will ever come close to having the staggering amount of personal tragedy in life that he did, nor could we imagine what our short term or long term responses would be if we did have those burdens to shoulder. He had flaws, and I disagreed with his politics- so what? It's politics.

At least we will never again be subjected to his horrendous "singing" in the Senate chambers.....

what pi&*es me off most is this "America's royal family" crap....as I recall, we fought a couple of wars with Britain to throw off the yoke of royal oppression and as Irish immigrants from the potato famine era, the Kennedys should have known and protested that moniker. America has no royals, no elite. That is what is wrong with most elected officials at the national level (and below) is that they forget that they are PUBLIC servants and therefore must answer to the people they work for....not vice versa.....

Live Free or Die....

You feel oppressed by the Kennedys? Ted was a senator from Massachusetts. How could he have oppressed you?

did I say I was oppressed? you most likely understand perfectly the point I was making. OTOH, if Kennedy or anyone, voted for or supported what became an oppressive policy, then yes, he could have oppressed me (and you). Also, how do you know that I did not once live in MA? Are you a psychic? Walk into South Boston and you can see many of my relatives....

I recently came across a radio show with Ron Reagan as the MC. Yesterday while driving, I listened to some of the show. As an aside, it was only about a weekago that I found out that he is the son of former president Reagan. It turns out that the Kennedys and the Reagans are old friends, going back 4 or 5 decades or so.

While listening to the show, Ron introduced his mom, Nancy, as one of the callers. She spoke of the friendship between her husband and Ted and that they had worked together a number of times for common goals. She lamented that the political parties have fallen to mostly dealing with each other as acrimonious enemies.

At one point Ron speculated to Nancy that his dad might have had a bond with Ted due in part to the loss of Ted’s brothers. For those too young or otherwise unaware, Ron’s dad was shot while in office. His mom said that she never talked about a special relationship based on that but said it was very possible.

Anyway, I thought it a unique mom-son conversation to be held on a memorable day.

That said, the country would benefit itself by imposing term limitations in Congress. Our heavy preference of voting based on name familiarity has brought us more harm than good, overall.

Dubya's agenda, maybe.

Splain to me how Teddy's agenda cost anyone their life.

By the way - ever heard of that guy Jim Adkisson? He was into the "Liberalism is a metal disorder" book. He burst into a church considered to be liberal, the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee and opened fire, shooting 8 people, killing 2. Guy made it clear he was out to kill liberals who were ruining the country. Said that he wanted to kill all 100 people in Jonah Goldberg's book "100 People Who Are Screwing Up America," but would not be able to get at them. I don't imagine the story got a lot of play on FOX news:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/29/us/29knox.html?_r=1&ref=todayspaper&pagewanted=print

http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/jul/28/church-shooting-police-find-manifesto-suspects-car/

From the second piece:

Adkisson targeted the church, Still wrote in the document obtained by WBIR-TV, Channel 10, "because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country's hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of media outlets."

Adkisson told Still that "he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them in to office."

Adkisson told officers he left the house unlocked for them because "he expected to be killed during the assault."

Inside the house, officers found "Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder" by radio talk show host Michael Savage, "Let Freedom Ring" by talk show host Sean Hannity, and "The O'Reilly Factor," by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly.
