On the contrary, there are a lot of dried up old hippies whose entire world view was and still is shaped by Vietnam.

I guess I missed the point then. The current debate has nothing to do with ancient history.

Sorry if some clown on TV hurt the feelings of some military folks. The military officers will do whatever job the civilian government gives them regardless of their political opinions, so his comment was silly. Getting upset over the comment is equally silly.

Glad to hear it.

Apparently I save myself an enormous amount of aggravation by not watching TV.

Are you referring to the spitting or the war?

How do you get from an idiotic statement by Chris Matthews to a generalization about "lefties"? Since when does he speak for the left?

Matthews said it for the shock value and the ratings, nothing more. They've been getting clobbered when it comes to viewer share, guess they had to try something.

I've given up on all the ususal clowns, and tune into BBC America - at least I can hear the news without any added overtones.

As far as Vietnam being "ancient history", some of us resemble that remark.

I graduated high school in '67. I went to college right after. I never really understood why going to college exempted you from the draft but I was glad to accept the deferrment.

While in college I came to believe that the war was wrong and that we should not have been there.

I never understood kids who called vets baby killers. I fully believe that some spit on vets. I also believe a lot of folks who did such things now regret it. I always felt that the soldiers were as much victims of the conflict as the innocent farmers in Viet Nam.

Any wrongdoing was the responsibility of our political leaders.

Any vet has my respect and gratitude....and sympathy.

I just finished a book about vietnam, written by a marine who fought and served there...."A rumor of war". It was a good book. I recommend it.

Saying that West Point is not a friendly environment for a liberal president to make his point.
