there are millions of case files of teenagers acting in a socially irresponsible manner. those of us who made it through high school can verify that.

he's probably a good kid who for whatever reason became excited at the ball game and momentarily lost control. give him a break.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but even good kids make bad decisions and have to pay the consequences. I mean, did he really think that he would just run all over the field then hop back in the stands to watch the rest of the game? Hopefully for him it is a learning experience, but now he's "the guy who got tased at the Phillies game" in school

here's the problem. you are approaching this as if the kid was playing with a full deck of cards i.e., emotionally and mentally stable. of all the age groups, teenagers are amongst the most UNstable. they are prone to every type of mental and emotional disorder possible. I'm not a psychiatrist but it appears this young man momentarily lost his marbles, something which is just not that unusual for teenage youth. he didn't kill anyone, he didn't wreck his car into anyone, he just went crazy for a few minutes. two of those strong infielders could have easily tackled him and that would have been that. end of story. but, with the tazing, it could have ended a lot differently.

and as far as his reputation in school goes, who knows, some hot girl might think he's happening and start hanging out with him.

I see what you mean, but I just think no matter what his state, there needs to be consequences. The tazer was probably a bit overkill if you ask me, but at the same time its not entirely out of the question when you do something like that. When you go and do something stupid, you have to face the music. If I hadn't had consequences when I was that age I'd probably have gone off the deep end--a lot of my friends did because they didn't really see the consequences of their actions.

If he was that unstable, lock him up, throw away the key, weld the door shut. If not, the parents are responsible. Yes, I did stupid things when young. Unfortunately for me, you weren't my father or mother and I had to pay for them. Take the time I busted the neighbor's flood lamp. I was made to somehow get him a replacement. Not enough money? No problem. Dad provided it. Repayment terms applied. WITH INTEREST. No job? That's ok. There are jobs to do around the house. I don't know how many times I had to wax the cars by hand for $3 or dig a hole for the tree and get paid $5. Bit by bit, it got paid WITH INTEREST building up so I can't take too much time. At the end of it, I leaned my lesson.

Classic, doing stupid stuff in HS is fun. Getting arrested is fine they seal your record when you turn 18 anyway.

All true. HOWEVER, do you believe that without consequences the kid will magically behave now that he is 18 yrs and 1 day vs 17 yrs 364 days?

He MIGHT or might NOT. However, if he has gotten into stupid habits, maybe not. If you take all the consequence out or reduce it, why would he smarten up? If I could hit you and nothing happens, why would I change that? OTOH, if I get a broken nose everytime I hit you, I learn quick.

Fine. Let them pay for it too

Maybe in CT they do.

I had a background check (Via the Sheriffs Department.) run on a 24 year old potential employee here and was provided records back to middle school vandalism in the 8th grade at age 13.

hate to break it to you, but 95% of all teenagers fall into the category of being mentally unstable. should we lock them all up? or should we attempt to guide them onward and upward towards a higher path? the system leans towards the "lock 'em up and throw away the key" attitude. only problem with that is when they are in Juvy they learn how to do more bad things from other bad kids. then they come out and run the streets practicing what they learned while in lock up.

for the record, I am not saying they should not be disciplined by their parents. on the contrary, if dad whipped out the "board of education" more often, we wouldn't see the kids at the court house.

the system is working.

Being brought up in Asia, I see a lot of difference. First off, over there, they don't believe in mindfawks, aka The science of blame. There is a good swat on the ass for misbehavior. Know what is weird? There are no reports of "My kid ate sugar and acts up". As I have said before, I have twisted mindfawks to say what I want them to say even at 10yo so no, I don't believe in them telling me that the kids are mentally unstable. More likely, the kids are ill disciplined. In asia, the kids growing up were subjected to more discipline and were made to be aware that when you do this, that will happen. Their behavior is better. Here, we label them ADD, ADHD, mentally unstable, try to guide them here and there and they misbehave more. Coincidence?

as I said above, I believe in fatherly discipline. especially for a male child. male children tend to tow the line when father reigns them in. sometimes male children tend to see their mothers as weak and an easy mark. I know I did. but cross the old man, and my tail end was lit up like a bon fire. tended to keep my a** in line.

Screw up with my mom and she might not have the strength to whip my ass. OTOH, when Dad came home, well...... Don't plan on sitting down for a while. Often I was given 3 choices. Your ass, your palm or Dad's choice. You don't extend out the first 2 and he picks up whatever he finds handy and hits whatever he can. The next day, you might have to find a way to make amends and pay for what you did.

Take my brother for instance. When he was defiant and walked out, Dad, didn't say a word. When his friends couldn't put him up any longer, he had to come home and beg to be let in. Dad didn't budge and asked him to return in a week. We found out that he was living in a crate we put outside the house for that week. Finally, after begging again, and this was after work with the neighbor kids around, Dad let him in. What did I learn from that? If you want to walk, walk but don't expect to come back easily. Hard lesson for the brother? Yes. Consider it an object lesson. Same as when my cousin cussed in front, not at, Grandpa. He was beaten severely. Another object lesson. Be respectful of Grandpa. Pain is an excellent instructor. Sometimes, it even instructs others around.

So in this case, others can see what could happen to them for stupidity. Best thing of a Taser is that it doesn't care what your silly excuses your mindfawk has to say.

the process is simple. spare the rod, spoil the child. if the parents took care of business with their young, there would be NO need for the "state" to intervene. but, that's the problem nowadays. the parents give little Johnnie and little Susie the keys to a new BMW 760 V12 to drive to school to show off to their friends. next thing, little Johnnie is involved in a street race and somebody dies as a result.

I had to mow yards and save my money to buy my first car. I treated the car with respect because I had to WORK for it. kids today get the keys to a new Jaguar free gratis.

There would be less need since nothing is absolute and they have their bad people too.

Ya think? People have too much of an entitlement mentality these days. Not just the rich kids with the BMW you are talking about. It goes all the way from rich to poor.

When you work for it, you don't screw up as much because you know how hard it is to come by. People these days give their kids whatever they can. Like I said, the rich give BMWs the poor give to their limit and some. Don't think that only the rich kids are ill disciplined because of a lack of consequences. That is the mess we are in today.
