That's too bad if true... I was hoping for reconciliation.

I imagine that there's going to be a plane load coming back from Afghanistan as well - anyone that was quoted as saying anything even remotely disparging in that article, or viewed as being even remotely connected or sympathetic to the general. Sounds like a whole slew of officer's careers just got flushed down the toilet.

It isn't a Harvard (not sure) professor and another cop where they can have a beer at the WH. He criticized his boss in public and therefore had to be fired. I'd have fired any employee of mine who criticized the company in public too, his popularity with the Afghan officials notwithstanding.

Understood, but I think (discounting those who are going to call him "weak" regardless) President Obama had a real chance to demonstrate that he's above vindictiveness. (Not that this is a vindictive act -- we don't know what was said behind closed doors).

If he had no intention of retaining the general, why was he summoned back to the WH and why did the President say he wanted to talk to him first? For all we know, though, the general could have insisted on resigning. Hard to say what really happened. I had just hoped for the best, which I submit would have been some sort of reconciliation.

There will probably be a bunch of reassignments to unfavorable posts in the near future, indeed. They should have known better.

Perhaps so but I do favor a person with vindictiveness. Hence the reason I voted AGAINST McCain. I don't trust a man who forgives people who put him up in the Hanoi Hilton.

Because it would have made him look bad to others for firing him on the spot. He has an image of "niceness" to maintain. This way he can leave some doubt like what you are expressing.

Until the next Prez who runs against what Obama does comes along. Like Gen Shinseki was basically forced out and now welcomed back, McChrystal, if he wants a job back, will have to wait for the next Prez who hails him as a hero.

The difference is congress is not subject to the UCMJ and the president is not their CinC.

Officers at the rank of general are widely respected and are responsible for the safety of us and our troops. Congress on the other hand is a bunch of petty bimbos.

Unless you disagree with their recommendations:

Ironic --

Then (September 2007): "Sen. Obama's question is not about General Petraeus's patriotism," said Bill Burton, spokesman for Sen. Barack Obama , D-Ill. "It's about his logic. There's no evidence that this surge is producing the political progress needed to resolve the civil war in Iraq, or that it will be accomplished through more of the same.
