Ok I need some W123 coupe gurus to help me with this but I think there is more going on here then I originally thought. I talked to my friend and went to look at the car. At first I thought this was just a smash and grab job but a few things aren't adding up, this was way too neat for that.

#1 The neutral safety switch no longer works (The car could be moved out of park without the key) There is no way to get that radio out without moving the shifter and i'm guessing that only a competent thief would know how to disable the switch. OR did they simply break the gear lever out of place? (There is no visible damage to the shifter so they didn't force the radio out)
#2 The window looks like it was broken from the INSIDE out. (There is very little glass inside the car) I'm waiting for a pic but apparently this section of glass is very much intact. (Waiting for pics)
#3 The car doors where locked. What kind of a thief bothers to even close the doors never mind lock them? With that in mind why even bother smashing the small passenger side window? Most thieves just destroy the front windows don't they?

My theory....I get the darnedest feeling that this car was targeted for a joy ride (I have other reasons for this theory that i'll be posting tomorrow) I know that the broken window was the one that was sticking while being raised. What if someone took it for a spin and lowered all the windows but broke that window while raising it. In an attempt to cover their tracks they made it look like a radio theft.

I might be looking into this a bit too much but something just seems amiss.

I feel your pain & your anger!

My daughter had her window on her Volvo broken right in front of the house parked on the street. Found a used one at the junkyard for like $20. But still....wasted a whole Saturday on that.

Just recently they broke the window on her Kia. Parked out front in the street again.
$50 for that and another day wasted.

The guy across the street had his truck broken into. He said he lost a lot of work related stuff + had to buy a whole new door.
And a guy around the corner had his convertible roof ripped up on his BMW.

I hope the police catch these aholes before I do.

The weird thing is, right after a rash of broken windows someone is always coming around offering to replace windows!
Think the police might get a clue?

Danny

The shift lever can be moved to any position without the key being turned to unlock the steering.

The bad guy may have tried to cover his tracks, not unheard of. Wanting to get a radio as cleanly as possible for a higher resale price, maybe.

I agree, very little glass inside.

The rear window is smaller, so less noise when breaking, I guess. And I see no reason to leave the doors open after a robbery.

Just a thought or two.

I see....wouldn't I still have to depress the brake though? (I was able to shift it without pushing the brake pedal)

Fulcrum the window is easy, duct tape and a window punch, as for the shifter my CD doesn't need the key or the brake depressed to move the gear selector

Mercedes cars didn't get that feature until the 1990 model year.

On the W123 you can remove the shift lever out of P any time. Even if the car is off, without the key. The safety switch for the brake pedal was installed on '90 cars and above (my '89 190E is similar to the W123, but not the '90 300TE). Those cars '90 and above you have to step on the brake (w/ key in ignition) to remove shift lever from P.

Sorry to hear what happened. It looks like a pristine car.

Gotcha, simply assumed it was similar to my car (At least now I know why I have that instruction sticker on my shifter....new features require new instructions

It's just a question of their frame of mind. If they are willing to smash windows to take a radio why would they care if they kill your battery by leaving the door open? (And also risk waking you up from the sound of the car door closing.)

From what I was told the glass was not taped in any way (Although it does have a slight tint on it)

There's no telling what goes through someone's mind.

My thought was an open door will cause suspicion, as opposed to a closed door. It's possible to quietly close a door.

When my car was broken into the police were also quite useless. The best way to handle these situations is if you can find the person who did it, have a little "talk" with them in a quite private place and teach them about respecting property. I find crimes like this quite offensive because some loser my tax dollars are probably helping in some way destroys my hard earned property.

I believe karma needs to be helped along.

I once had a cop tell me the rear window is broken out so glass is not all over the front seat. He referred to the front seat as the 'work space' for the crooks, and who wants to do their work while sitting on broken glass?
