There was one 10ft away from me while I walked billy (80lbs pit bull). He took one look at my dog and went the other direction.

I'm surprised that he went for two large dogs and would be concerned if it was rabid.

Sometimes nothing beats a rifle, a Ruger Mini 14 with a cheap scope would have been ideal to dispatch him.

Over here we have a lot of trouble with wild dogs. A local sheep farmer has a few dead sheep carcases laced with cyanide that he got from a near by gold mine. We now & again find dead dogs about. I have been told there is a fungicide that fruit growers use that will drop a wild dog in 10 minutes after eating. Dont know the name though.

I have only seen two coyotes out in the daytime in 30 years in the country..... they were almost certainly rabid....
I was not able to kill them because I do not carry a weapon when using the tractor... by the time I got to the house and back they were gone...

Layback40, we in the states also have serious wild dog problems....and loose domestic packs of dogs at night in the cities ... whose animal control agencies work 8-5 daytimes...and can't figure out that dog owners let their dogs out at night... lots of deer are killed by groups of normal household dogs here in Texas...

Unfortunately there are irresponsible owners out there. I found two of my dogs on the street an industrial part of town where my shop is. It appears that they usually get abandoned there and do run in packs. Benny was about a week away from starvation when I got him 11 months ago. I watched that dog starve over three months from the time i first saw him to the time I managed to catch him which 2-3 attempts before he come near me.

I really could not ask for better dogs but I can understand how they can be a nuisance to farmers.

I had to trap my last dog also... was abandoned at an intersection .. out in the country not near any houses... fed it there a couple of days then put out trap... great dog except never got over being abused where it came from .. made it hard to take it to the vet... would lay down on back to get petted if she made the decision... but if she thought I wanted to rub her/go see the vet ... she would stay ten feet away... funny thing was.. once I bodily put her into the pickup truck to go... she sat up and acted like she really enjoyed traveling.... and was well behaved at the vets office too...
There was a famous game warden... in Travis County ( Austin , Tx) Simpson I think ... who would go on TV every chance he got to tell people what the packs of domestic dogs were doing to the deer around here...

One ran past the window where I work a week ago right across the lawn. And I've nearly hit one twice by some woods about a mile from my house....right here inside the city!!

How does that saying go? ~ 'Its not the dog in the fight, but more the fight in the dog that counts'!!

My friends dad had a pit mix that was used for hog hunts ,that dog was quit the animal from what the family members said of her.Its true that labs are the best for that sort of hunt though ,theyll sniff out then signal off their location of the animal to the hunters better than any breed.I had a large pack of Coyotes hanging around some empty land just south of home ,I say large because their howls were called out by the local train going by and several adults with pups would ring in .The nights were intersting to say the least,at the back of the property I could see their image in the lights of a building less than 100myrds.I once gave the head coyote a call out that he could be seen ,he stopped looked ,took two steps looked again ,I rang out ,I can still see you.Im to close to a major road for any real guns to be fired off so I was lucky that a remedy was to come soon. Its been over a year since any sightings and I was told the den was found by a local taxidermist that was trapping for pelts. Many bones were scattered around the den which he took pictures and video of ,hell be posting on youtube soon he said.

There was an article in the Los Angeles Times some time ago, about a guy who traps coyotes out here for a living.

He had numerous stories of owners letting their "large" dogs go after a coyote, i.e. rottweiler, doberman pincher, and all domestic dogs, no matter the type or size, were killed in no time by the coyote.

There's just a difference between a dog and a wild animal (coyote) that kills for living to survive.

I guess the roadrunner is just a little too fast for the coyote.
