Welcome to cap and trade via back-door fiat regulation.

Duke Power was already anticipating the EV market 15 years ago. They had a program such that they would set up a separate meter at your house specifically for your EV - and charge you nearly double the going rate for recharging it.

On the Prius - if the batteries get too low in city mode, the gas engine kicks back on and recharges them. At that, best I know there's no specific city mode - whether it's running on electric or gas or combination thereof, is all based on how fast the vehicle is moving.

And thus the reasoning behind Smartgrid and compatible houses and appliances - when the load becomes too great they can just remotely shut off your A/C, your EV recharger, your refrigerator, etc, etc - whenever they choose, for as long as they choose, for as many people as they choose - wihout having to build any more of those evil NIMBY generating plants.

So you can either run the AC or charge your car. If you want to do both, we need to stuff a coal plant in your backyard because thats the ONLY option. LOL

Not at all. But it seems that any time one of the utilities proposes building a new generating facility of ANY type, there's either a negative environmental or NIMBY response from some segment of the public at large. You can't use coal or even natural gas because of carbon emissions, you can't use nuclear because we're afraid it'll melt down, you can't use solar because we want our juicetricity to be on 24/7 and the HOA won't allow us to put panels on our roofs, you can't use windmills because it'll spoil Ted Kennedy's view of the ocean -

If we as the public won't allow them a workable affordable alternative for increasing generating capacity to meet OUR demand for it, than the only other alternative they have is to be able to shed excessive load when needed to keep from losing the entire system and routinely blacking out whole areas of the country.

And like it or not, at present the majority of our electricity is generated by coal-fired plants. Given the rate structure set upon them by the government, and the regulations on and capabilities of other types of generating plants, right now it's the most economical alternative they have, unless we're willing to accept a major increase in electric rates.

You may find this amusing, but one of the major arguments in the EV community over the past 20 years in favor of electric vehicles, has been that instead of having hundreds of millions of internal combustion vehicles each spewing their own brand of pollutants, with everyone driving EV's the emissions would be limited to a couple hundred coal-fired power plants, point source emissions, where there would be a dedicated staff 24/7 and state of the art emissions control equipment to keep pollutants in check, instead of depending on your neighbor to keep his 95 Suburban in good tune.

Hmmm.

IIRC, MB has not been very good at meeting CAFE MPG standards, and always runs into fines... I think they got hit with a huge fine this past year.

Well yeah because the Smart car sucks. If they sold more of those they could offset a few more V8s. At least they're bringing a 4 cyl C class next year but they're still way behind on hybrids.

That of course is true. But I see it better to keep prices the same and force higher fuel efficiency to save money for people who need it.

Raising the cost of fuel will save money. Look at all the fuel-efficient cars available in Europe. They wouldn't exist if fuel was cheap.
