EPC software will not open

Will the Mercedes EPC software NOT run with Windows 7? Recently I purchased a new computer, it comes with Windows 7. I renewed my subscription, installed the latest software and nothing. I did not see any mention in the tech requirements about Windows 7, only XP.

You need to install the Java runtime environment. Works just fine in Win7. The EPC is a Java Application.

Ok, here is what I did. On the EPC instruction page

Download the Java Runtime Environment and WebStart, following the step-by-step instructions below. Simply click on the Java icon to download The Java Runtime Emvironment (JRE) 5.0 Update 4 for Windows,
This might be where things go wrong.

In the Windows Control Panel, select Internet Options, and open the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the "Java (Sun)" section and uncheck the box on the line "Use JRE 1.x.x for (requires restart)"
No problem here.

I click on the link Click here to be reditrected to the Sun Microsystems download page for the Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 which includes Java Web Start. This is the preferred version of Java for this web site. Click on the link for the JRE 5.0 Update, accpet the license agreement, select the correct file and install it using the Windows Online Installation, or if desired you may download the file for Offline installation.
it takes me here

JRE 5.0 Update 10 includes the JVM technology
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications. More info...
Download JRE Installation Instructions
click on download JRE
and it takes me here to the latest version version 10, this might be where things are screwed up.

J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
You must accept the Oracle Binary Code License Agreement for Java SE to download this software.

Thank you for accepting the Oracle Binary Code License Agreement for Java SE; you may now download this software.
Windows Online Installation (typical download size is ~7.1MB) 245.76 KB jre-1_5_0_10-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe

I can only assume that I have to use version 4, any suggestions before I try version 4?

I'm guessing (and it is only a guess - 'cos I don't use Windows) is that Windows 7 has a slightly more together firewall and that the ports that EPC uses are not open. If you read through the irritating EPC instructions you'll find some reference to the ports...

Well, after trying several times last night, disabling the firewall, allowing Java to run, I could go on and on................

I found this, and it could be a possibility Daimler AG - Service & Parts net

and from the home page, although it's targeted to the European markets.....

+++ Notice: The applications EPC and WIS/ASRA require the Java Runtime version 6 (1.6.0). Please do not install Java Runtime 7 (currently Beta; 1.7.0-ea), because EPC and WIS/ASRA cannot be started with this version. +++

Still have not heard from tech support.

Smile EPC Wont Work in Windows 7 IE11 and Java 7

For those of you who have found that the EPC wont run on your new/upgraded PC since the fall of 2013, the problems are that Internet Explorer 11 and Java 7 both have enhanced security features that keep Java - which is needed by the EPC program - from loading and the EPC from executing. The solutions are: 1) If you are using Windows 7, rollback Internet Explorer 11 to IE10 (Thru Control Panel - Programs and Features - View Installed Updates - Type "Internet Explorer" in the search box and uninstall IE11; your browser will then revert to IE10). Then restart the PC, open IE10 (to your homepage or any page) and in the toolbar, click on the "tools" icon (the gear) and select "About Internet Explorer") and UNCHECK "Install New Versions Automatically". 2) For both Windows XP and Windows 7, uninstall the latest version of Java (Java 7) and go to the Java.com website, look in the archived programs area, and install the last version of Java 6. Then on your computer in the start menu run dialog box, type "msconfig" and check the box "Selective Startup" and under the "Startup" tab scroll down to the SunJava automatic update line and uncheck the box. This will keep Java from trying to install its latest version. Once you have done these modifications to your computer, when you log on to the EPC please refer to the installation instructions there that should address common other issues, such as configuring your browser options to accept Java. Until M-B upgrades the EPC to accept newer security features you'll have to live with the older technology IE10 and Java 6.

Maybe I'm not comparing apples to apples, but I run Win 7 and IE 11 on a laptop. Have been able to access a number EPC for various older cars from a link that Whunter posted in a Diesel thread last night. The title is something like "Russian EPC is back". Further into it Whunter provides links to U. S. EPC. I found in some cases that accessing "Maintenance Manuals" returned a document not found msg, but all others were available.
