Yet others use it pityingly to refer to the poor sap (in their opinion) who, by driving a car or truck, isn't enjoying the glorious freedom of two-wheeled-ness.
I think some refer to sport motor cycle riders as spots. Or soon to be a spot on the road. A few years back, it seems P'up drivers and some SUV drivers were the worst. I think mainly Dodge Dakotas. I did have two that got irate with me in a construction zone. I wasn't going fast enough or pull over for them. One flashed his hi-beams and blinded me temporairly. The possiblity of hitting a cement bridge pylon was there. Futunately, I wasn't carrying at the time.

I have a theory. On the one hand, it's simple statistics - Toyota sells a lot of vehicles. On the other hand, it's the kind of people who purchase toyotas - it's a car for people that don't give a **** about driving. If you don't car about the car, or driving it well, how much attention, care, and skill are you going to apply to operating it?

My $.02.
you got the stats and demographic right !!!! just add cell phone and you got a bike killer. 90 percent of my near miss on a motorcycles have been distracted drivers,, cell phones kill.

Nevada recently passed a ban on cell phoning while driving. They're only writing warnings until January 1, then it's on. I can hardly wait.

edit: nevermind about the helicopters...er...just found out some guy was shot outside the neighborhood bar (less than 1/2 mile away from me). Scary to think I'm usually there or across the street on Tuesdays. C'est la vie.
If the helicopter is overhead, then there's two posibilities...

#1.) The perp they're tracking is looking for some open door for him to flee into and after that?????

#2.) The jack-boots will soon be descending on ropes and entering your domicile too soon...RUN AND DON'T LOOK BACK!!!

Indiana has a ban on teen drivers using cellphones or texting while driving. I haven't heard of anyone that has been ticketed. I do think its a problem even for 'mature' drivers. I think there is a ban on Over the Road Truck drivers texting or possibly using cell phones. I haven't heard again of any one loosing their CL license. I hope Nevada does better.
I do wonder in case of an accident, if cell phone use would be grounds for a civil lawsuite. In Germany, if your in an accident and don't have a seatbelty on, it your fault. Also, they yank your license for hitting a bicyclist or first DUI. To a large extend, I do think that it depends on situations. About 15 years ago, a kid was killed riding his bike. From the story I heard, he darted out into the road. No way the driver could react, and the kid was in the wrong. I think the parents told the driver it wasn't his fault. Also, I don't have a problem with hands free devices, for adults.

I for one am in favor of this. Of course I live in California where it's already illegal and every time I drive somewhere I STILL see people with the phone to their ear (or texting).

A judge also recently ruled that "no device in-hand use while driving" includes being stopped at a red light. His attorney has said they will appeal that to the state supreme court. Yes, that's a burning issue that must be pursued, the right to talk and text while at a red light!

To me this is really easy. If you have to talk and can't afford a headset, pull over. And if the text is that important, pull over and read/send, then get back on the road. If your life is so busy you can't do that, then you need to cut back, period, before you cut someone's life short.

I think that's because it's only a $20 ticket for the first strike and $50 on subsequent offenses. Not enough to be a deterrent. In Nevada it's going to be $50 the first time, $100 the second, and $250 for third and subsequent.

I agree. I sometimes wonder what people are yapping about that they think is important enough to justify endangering themselves and everyone around them.

That's an excellent point. Personally I'd be in favor of a change: when it is directly observed by the officer, the cellular phone is confiscated as the fine and penalty. THAT would be an actual deterrent.

I like that idea. For me, not having my phone would be a minor annoyance, but the kind of people who would be subject to this penalty would probably take it as a major hardship.

In my area the worst offenders are always in BMW's, Ram's, and POS ghetto rides.

I don't know the laws in CA. Also, what a Judge would rule. Also, what precidents have been set. In Indiana, I think it is intent to operate a vehicle. Mainly concerned with DUI. I think its once the key is in the ingnition. Also, I'd argue, that while at a complete stop, the operator would need to have the ability to move in case of impeding an emergency vehicle.

Me, the shop, and the insurance company went around on repairs today. The final verdict is: totaled. I'm taking care of the paperwork tomorrow.

I only had the bike for five months.
