Chevorlet Apache

I am not sure of the year on this thing, but it's a pretty neat little wagon/truck. Whats more interesting is what powers it. From what I was told, this was a factory thing and might not have done a lot of them, (not sure if this is correct, but what I was told) this truck has a Detroit Diesel in it, and Factory AC. I diddnt get any pictures inside it, but it seemed to be all there. This was in a whole line of cars I took pictures of, This was the most interesting as well as an old Chrysler Desoto.

Everything is for sale I was told minus the old Ice cream truck. if there is interest I'll post the rest of the pictures in another thread

What is that, a 4-53? What's the tank in the engine bay?

The tank could be an air filter, but that's just a guess from that photo. I think the engine is a 3-53, it's too short for a 4.

1958 - Significant redesign of front end. All ⅓-ton trucks are now called Apaches. Truck now has four headlights instead of the previous two and features a shorter, wider grille running the width of the front end. Parking lights are now in the grille instead of being in the front of the fender and the hood is similar to 1955/1956 models, but with a flat "valley" in the middle. First year for factory-equipped air conditioning.

X2
Its probably not a 3-71 though.

Interesting that it has an alternator. They were not common pre 1960.
The yellow tank on the side is probably the air cleaner. The silver thing on the top of the motor is the rocker/valve cover.

Definitely not a 3-71, as they do not have pulleys on the cam and balance shaft. The 71 is also quite heavy, about 1500#. If that's an original vehicle, it's probably quite collectible.

61 chevy Apache K20 4-53T Detroit Diesel part1 - YouTube

Engine in the video looks roughly the same size as the one in the picture above.

I doubt that engine is original. The 'Detroit Diesel' sunshade is not the kind of thing that would have existed when that thing was built. I'm guessing whoever put the engine in there put the sunshade on too.

That same generation of motor was put in the river boats in Vietnam ,twin motors ran those Aluminium bodied boats during the war.An american boat builder ,Hatteras I believe ,got the contract after another builder couldnt make the commitment on the performance end .This version was 380 hp tuned performance x2 .

I had a 4-53 in a shrimp boat. You'd be lucky to see 120hp out of one on a good day. What a dismal POS engine..smoke, scream, and fog. But, you could fix it with a hammer and some wire.

Wow I thought all Apaches were pick up trucks not vans. Cool. I want it!

(Can't afford it - not allowed to have it - but I could bloody well fix it)
