37 Cord Indiana State Police car

My dad told me he got pulled over by a state policeman in a cord one time when he was a young man. I believe that was when dad was drviing a 36 Chevy.

I always was a little dubious about a Cord as a state police vehicle but am glad to see this picture confirming there was one.

Over on the Studebaker forum someone posted this pic:

That siren is bigger than the cops' heads. Aerodynamic, too.

Great comments! I found the original picture over on the Studebaker forum and some of the same comments were made over there.

I know a guy that might trade a Studebaker Express for that Cord!

I remember my Dad talking about my Uncle having a Cord right after WWII. My Dad said it was in bad shape and thought that my uncle was nuts for buying it. I was a little kid when I first heard this and even then thought my Dad must be full of it, for not thinking that having a Cord in ANY condition wasn't a neat car to have.

They had some gearbox issues I believe. There was a fellow here in Lafayette who made some replacement parts which solved the issues with the tranny. I believe he is now gone on to the great racetrack in the sky though.

Your docent from the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum reporting in....
This style of Cord was built in 1936 (810 chassis) and 1937 (812 chassis). The police cars were supercharged versions of the base flat head V8 engine that was designed my Fred Duesenberg. The supercharged version was only made for the 812 chassis. These are unit body cars with 'front drive' as it was called back then. The 810/812's were designed and built while the last few nails of Auburn Automobile were being driven into the coffin. (Auburn Automobile was the holding company for Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg)
These Cords suffer from many quality problems the first year. These was no money, no time, but many orders for the car. The good is they have a low center of gravity and can easily out handle anything else on the road. I have ridden in the one that belonged to its designer, Gordon Buehrig. It does have an amazingly modern feel in its ride. Sooooooo much more to tell about these Cords. Just ask and I will tell.
