It's cool but China prolly has $75 missles that can take down any B52. Prolly got the basic design from the US. Paid for with US tax dollars that won't be repaid for 162 years, with interest only ten zeros or so.

Cool....about 15 to twenty second takeoff intervals.

There have been Russian missiles that can knock these down since 1966.

That's why many of the B-52's have been modified to carry six cruse missiles that can launch from 600 miles away from their targets. And then land within three meters of their target.

What it would take for a Russian ICBM to travel and land, which if I remember correctly would take 20 minutes from launch detection in Russia to impact in the US. So figure by the time NORAD cut the orders you had maybe 15 minutes.

I thought that the later B-52s were armed with long-range nuclear air-to-ground missiles and would loiter over Alaska or Greenland waiting to approach the Soviet coast and dump their loads. We weren't talking about US to Moscow flights at 500 mph, but rather the airborne equivalent of a boomer sub that stood on station, ready to ruin the Russians' (and our) day.

"Minimum Interval Takeoff was designed by the United States Air Force to get its bomber fleet in the air within fifteen minutes of an alert of an incoming missile attack, that being the time in which the bases would be obliterated.[1] Although it had roots during the Second World War, the tactic came of age during the Cold War"

Sucks to be the guys left back on the base.....

Yes, the wake turbulence is quite an issue with such close intervals, but since they are the same size aircraft, it's not nearly as dangerous as if a smaller craft were in the wake. It would easily flip over a smaller aircraft and drive it into the ground.

Thanks for posting this Hat. It was fun to watch.

The wingtip vortices do not develop until the wing starts making lift. One would assume that they all make lift at about the same point on the runway. If there is a little crosswind, it will blow the vortices off the runway before the next plane reaches that point.

You would think that they would be taking this all into account as the sequence the planes.

We used to see these operations around here years ago when Carswell was a SAC base. On a calm day, it would take several hours for the smoke schmutz to clear. I lived about 25 miles west of the base at the time. It sounded like a low level thunder that lasted for 20 minutes or so.

Watching the takeoff of what was it 20 planes? I pondered how many dollars worth of fuel was being expended for the practice run?
