Personally I have no issue with kids selling lemonade, I made my first small fortune as a six year old with breeding hamsters and selling them to the local pet store.

But it's the law, cops are hired to enforce the law, so what other choice do they have, should a cop interpret the law how he sees it fit?

Yes but that was before the age we have today. This is like saying back when, child brides were allowed. Today, not so.

Therein lies the problem. If you give him license to interpret the law as he sees fit like in the rouge cop movies that seem to end well, it could very well come back to bite you when you disagree with his interpretation. A very good thing we have is a judge to sort out the law.

Honestly, get an honest job that doesn't involve being a state sponsored thug. I suggest prostitution or burger flipping. Most cops won't be missed if they go away, and the fewer cops there are, the less time the remainder will have to go after petty nonsense like this.

This being said, I can understand not wanting vending on Capitol grounds (rather than a lemonade stand on private property). The way it was handled was ridiculous though.

Why don't you go make sure that there aren't these laws that hold others responsible for your misfortune so that there are no such ridiculous laws. Or suck on a .45 cal lollipop. If you can't afford one, it will be provided.

They are given a law to enforce. That's their job.

Maligning them in this situation is simply a mistake. I thought they handled it perfectly, giving the vendor ample opportunity to apologize and take the stand down.

They refused to do it and because combative. So, they get arrested.

The only part that was not acceptable was when the cop tried to block the cameraman on several occasions. That's a violation on their part, but, apparently, they'll do it every time to get rid of any evidence of their misbehavior. However, there was no misbehavior in this instance other than the attempt to physically block the camera.

I'd take the stand down. No way I'd actually APOLOGIZE to anyone, let alone a piece of filth in a blue uniform.

As far as enforcing the law, the people tasked with enforcing laws are just as much of a problem as the law itself. If no one was willing to enforce a law, the law would be as good as void.

Please, aren't we done with the tough guy ghetto talk? Seriously? The other day you were just talking about punching a boss in the nose for firing you for something you considered wrong. I'll bet when push comes to shove, you wouldn't have the guts to stand on your own and be crying to the filth in a blue uniform for protection.

And that would be fine until someone decides to selectively NOT enforce a law you deem necessary and then you'd squeal like a stuck pig. Cops should NOT be allowed to selectively enforce laws or not. That is what the courts are for. You'd be fine not enforcing this law but how about one that affects your income? Think you'd go for a cop deciding to do this or not do that on a whim?

The only problem is when they go beyond what they are tasked to do and get into the "power trip" and violate the rights of the citizen in a huge way. We've seen plenty of that.

But, if they simply enforce the laws as written, no more, and no less, I'm perfectly fine with that.

If cops enforced every single law they saw violated we'd all be slapped with fines and jail time.

It is up to the individual discretion of the officer to enforce a law or not. Think of the millions of kids who would have jail or juvenile hall on their records if they weren't given warnings instead of arrested.


The police chief is either not giving us the whole story (if someone had complained or a similar incident caused problems in the past) or she's happy in her ignorance of how law enforcement should operate.

If it weren't for the huge number of complete arseholes in our world, we wouldn't have so many laws which occasionally put a cramp on normal everyday people.

Who is to say that there isn't some deranged kid out there who thinks selling lemonade with arsenic in it would be a real fun pastime?
If the parents had a lick of sense, they would have taken the time to get the licensing and permits together so that their kids entrepreneurial experience did not end this way.
Blaming the police (which I enjoy as much as the next guy) for enforcing sensible laws in a decent manner is a waste of time and energy.
Pick on them for the real offenses, there are plenty of them out there...

I doubt a given kid would be any more likely to do so than a licensed vendor or disgruntled Mickey Dee's employee. The chances of deliberate poisoning are so rare as to be able to be discounted.

Besides, no one forces anyone to buy from the lemonade stand. Caveat emptor.

And yes, a lot of health codes are asinine, not to mention useless. Especially since I've seen the kitchen conditions in some supposedly duly licensed and inspected restaurants, and they were much worse than the average lemonade stand or taco cart, where at least everything is visible.

Just say it plainly. You want selective enforcement of law. As long as it suits you.
