First Aid kit

I try to keep my Merc as original as possible even to the extent that she still has a complete original Fist Aid kit. Most of my mates who've got Mercs haven't got complete ones anymore,so who else here still has an intact kit?Anyone know where I can get the little green and white sticker for it's compartment. It's the little details that matter.Bear

When you guys from the UK call a Mercedes a 'merc', how do you pronounce it?

Merc as in "merck" or Merc as in "mercenary"

In the U.S., the "merck" pronunciation is our slang for a Mercury, a division of Ford, which you may not have in the U.K.

It really doesn't matter as everyone on this site knows you are referring to a Mercedes. If you call a Mercedes a Merc to any American, he will assume you're talking about a Mercury.

I have an interest in language as I've lived in a foreign country for a while, and have a degree in Linguistics.

For that matter, I wonder what slang they use for Mercedes in Australia or New Zealand.

Fwiw, in Japan, they usually call a Mercedes a "Benz".

Pronunciation

Merc is said in the same way as Turk ie someone from Turkey,I hope that clears it up for you.Whenever I post a thread I try to remember that although we both speak english, some words are spelt the same but have different meanings.Case in point when I say I had something nicked, I mean stolen not cut.
In the event I need some specific information for my Merc I write the UK and US words thus bonnet/hood,this way I try to maximise my response.
Then again sometimes I forget all the above and write what I'm thinking at the time, including slang and native colloquialism. My apologies to you if sometimes you dont understand our version of the english language.Dont be frightened to ask,'cos some words aren't going to be in any dictionary. Bear

Thanks for the reply.

You don't have to apologize for differences between American and U.K. english.

Neither is correct or incorrect, at least linguisticly speaking. Different pronunciations / meanings are just that - different. It also makes life interesting.

Linguistics as a discipline in the U.S. established a standard, called American Standard English, that is used as a standard to compare other regional dialects to.

It is interesting that Walter Conkrite, who was the most popular newscaster in the beginning of broadcast TV, was used as a basis in establishing this standard. He was from the midwest, although he doesn't have the stereotypical 'midwestern' twang.

I take it that Ford doesn't sell Mercury's in the U.K.?

For the most part they are just rebadged Ford's with different interiors. They are starting to finally design cars / suv's that are unique to Mercury, but they have a brand positioning which doesn't seem to have a home at Ford anymore, what with their acquisitions of Volvo, Jaguar, etc. They are supposed to be a step up from Ford, but Lincoln already has a higher positioning, so they can't be as 'premium' as Lincoln. Jaguar's are probably a step up from Lincoln, at least in price they are. Volvo is another question. I suppose they are on par with Jaguar, they just attract a different consumer.

They seem to be committed to the marque, but it doens't make any sense to me.

No they dont sell Mercury's over here.As far as I know they don't actually produce Ford badged cars over here anymore, they do however still make engines over here and other parts but no motors/automobiles anymore.Recently production has switched from Dagenham in Essex to Belgium shame.
Getting back to languages aren't some folk lazy when writing in english. How many threads are barely readable, cos folk haven't checked what they're writing?

I recall in a similar thread, discussions about how useful the contents of the first aid kit was, when you took into account that most have sat under the rear parcel shelf for many years, baking in the hot sun...

...the most useful items unfortunately, aged beyond use, crusty and deteriorated.

Check yours periodically and replenish those items that are in REAL need of replacement...

I still have the first aid kit that is all original with nothing replaced in it!!

I had to put it now in the trunk to make room for my 6x9 speakers that went into the rear shelf compartments.

FirstAid Kit?

When did they begin adding these to the MB? My 72 108 doesn't have one that I'm aware of. Where would it be located? It seems such a good idea that I'll install it even if it wasn't offered for my year.

My 1981 300TD-T still has it...contents complete. I was wondering if I could purchase new kits, or just replenish the supplies.
Thanks for the link!

I also have the original tool pouch with all MB tools just as if they were brand new!

Rackne,

The 108's had a first aid kit, it was mounted to the left trunk liner (the hardboard piece in the trunk). Mine, as well as almost all the others have long since gone by the wayside. Look at your liner, you should see two holes in the board where the bracket belongs. I have seen one 108 with the factory first aid kit properly mounted (same car also had the original spare too). The owner is a MBShop member from Las Vegas.

first aid kit

all original here - added 'aftermarket' rubber gloves as an improvement
green cross - maybe you can fashion one yourself as they tend to dry and peel
