These criminals have been pretty clear about who they are. The less obvious reasons is why they are doing this.

The BBC had a story on this morning that suggested it was about money. It turns out the Kenyans ran them out of a place they had been selling charcoal for millions and millions dollars a year and they are not happy about it. So they are sending a message to Kenya that Kenya should not mess with their money.

Apparently the charcoal 'business' was mostly a front for donations from other Arab states who don't wish to be seen as directly funding terror. Sort of like the USSR when it was paying Cuba five times the going rate for sugar. Simply a business deal; not a support of a puppet. (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Anyway... It's just a theory, but it does give some purpose to the entire affair.

Yeah- don't kick us out of our money tree otherwise we will kill everyone in a mall except those that are Muslim. Not religious terrorist at all.

I hope that the Kenyans go medieval on their asses and none escape. If they're trying to send a "message" to Kenya, then they need to have a much stronger one sent back to them.

Oh, the Muslim thing was only a part of it.

The Quran is pretty clear about one Muslim killing another. If it is by accident then you can talk to the Iman and maybe he can intercede for you, but if you kill one and mean to do it then nothing can get you into Paradise.

Survivors say that people were confronted by the gunmen and told to recite some common Quranic verses; something every Muslim would know. Anyone who hesitated, or made some sort of smart remark like 'Are you crazy' was shot dead. Others that could rattle off the correct verses were told to hit the road.

It was during this Q & A that most of the folks were able to escape.

So yeah, religion played a part in all of this, but mostly to the extent that the killers did not want to mess up their chances of entering Paradise.

But they are killing more muslims than anyone else. I guess no paradise for them.

Iv'e read that the way these guy loophole their way out of it is that the folks they killed were not the right kind of Muslims, or something like that.

Sounds complicated to me. There are some Iman's that come up with the rules to suit themselves, and if the people they are teaching can't read then how are they to know if the Iman is lying?

How does the kid know whether sex with the priest is the right thing to do or not? Same thing. You swallow, pun intended, whatever the priests dish out hook, line and sinker.

Christians have the option of reading the Bible. The supernumerous translations available in pretty much every language means that unless someone can't read... they can read the Bible. (except if you're RC.. then you have the magisterium to worry about)

The Qu'ran supposedly existed in Arabic... in Heaven. Meaning that if you aren't reading it in Arabic (classical Arabic at that), then you can't really read it. You are also dependent on the Hadith to understand it. And getting through only one collection of the Hadith (like Sahih al-Bukhari) is like reading only one book, every single night... for 6 months. And then you only have only the view of one collection (there are three main ones).

Then you have Imams... and if you're Shia you have an Ayatollah, etc.
