Check out this jewel that came into the shop, 1980 VW Rabbit diesel

Needs a good bit of maintenance work. Seems it had been sitting in a shed for a few years and was pulled out over the past few weeks. New owner wants a new timing belt installed. Starts and runs good. Needs a lot of rubber parts. The only rust is a little surface rust. New owner said he was going to get it painted.

I bet that is the gross weight. Rabbit feels like a very light car.

The clutch in my Rabbit is about gone. I bought a 1997 tdi Passat to replace it as my farm truck. Wanted 70 mph in quiet comfort.

It's not that gross
Light weight is about 1700lbs, so not a whole lot of car to shove around even with that low of hp. Probably faster than the 240d still.

My first car was the gas version. 1982 I believe. Drove it to the junkyard with 458,000 miles.

Great memories

Those little VW GOLFs are nice little cars but these days give you that roller skate with a roof feeling - you are very much in touch with the elements in one of them!

I would "NEVER" trade auto safety just to save a bunch of gallons of fuel.

Cars like that little VW Rabbit really scare me.

You can't argue with the laws of physics.

Even a nonrusted, solid and good running w123 240 Diesel automatic would be a more sensible choice.

SAFETY first.

Always.

Our '85 cabrio had over 500.000 miles. Sold it for $500,-, we had buyers lined up.

Oh you can always argue!

The odds are stacked against you though.

I wouldn't do it just to save fuel either. But I would do it to go faster.

More sensible, yes. However, the rush from running even a comparatively weak 72 hp engine pushing 600 lbs of combined vehicle and rider is quite pleasant. If I decide to spend some money, I could be on a ZX-10R with about the same weight but making around 200 hp and doing 186 mph on top end.

Yes, they can be. Unlike MB transmissions, VW produced a number of transaxles with different ratios. If you find the right one, performance is...well...better than a 240D anyway. The Jetta that I jeopardize my life with will cruise comfortably at 65 and would accelerate faster than my 240D, except that 3rd and 4th gear syncros are shot and I need to add about a heartbeat when passing though those gears.

I generally agree with JimB about safety. I stopped DDriving the rabbit a few years ago and switched to the Mk2 Jetta, which is quite a bit bigger (a lot like a W201). More importantly, my commute starts at 5AM on secondary roads and I leave work early, so its not too bad, but I still get a few close calls even so.

You will enjoy doing the timing belt on this. I bet it takes you less time than adjusting the valves on a 617

I have an Army buddy that's been driving one about that year model for YEARS. It looks like it was an artillery target at one point, but he keeps it in good mechanical condition and drives it all over the place. He goes from New Braunfels, Tx to NorthWest Colorado a couple of times a year to see his sister.

He's a top notch mechanic and for some reason loves the little car.
