That is the most MATURE definition of what a Man is that I have read so far. Good for you young Man.

Except of course, that view is a little close minded if you consider men who have not sired any children.

Take away raising a child part, the rest still applies. Providing for one's self and protecting one's self.

Agreed. Family could include an elderly parent, or a dis-abled sibling.

"A Taste of Literature and a Turn for Business, united in the same Person, never fails to make a great Man. A Taste for Literature, includes the Love of Science and the fine Arts. A turn for Business, comprehends Industry and Application as well as a faculty of conversing with Men."

I'm sorry, but these two statements cannot be equally valid at the same time.

FYI, with painted nails you never have to clean your nails after car maintenance. Just paint them skin colored and bam no more scrubbing!

A man does not necessarily have to have a family, or create one. But I do think a true man keeps his full integrity anywhere he goes. About all the grooming/bear-wrestling gimmicks, I'd say they are an extension of a greater quality: resourcefulness. A lot of people might not be Albert Einstein or have a PHD in History, but a true man should know what to do and say at all times.

Who has met a true man who is not resourceful?

I think you are saying: if you can't be handsome you can be handy?

I too have never grown up. Why wait for your second childhood option. Instead just hang on to the first one. Women in general believe we never totally grow up anyways.

I feel that just doing the best you can overall as we are not created equal and having consideration for others is important. It is somewhat hard for me to define as cultural issues and conditioning have a bearing as well.

This treat others as you would like to be treated yourself has a lot of merit. All of life should be a learning experience on how to become a better man. How you learn to roll with the punches life presents is just one example. There will be some as we are not programed with the female way of dealing with them may also be important.

What is the upside of trying? In my opinion when you meet someone old and miserable it is a byproduct of their past that they cannot undo. Years ago I wondered why some older guys where upbeat in general or relatively normal. Then there where those older guys that were obviously unhappy and miserable.. This was the only thing I could rationalize was the probable causative factor of their conditions.

The other thing is a man should not carry mental crutches. Some do and do not realise the self damage they inflict over time.

I wish I were still yet a better person or man myself. Although in general still I try to be. Of course you should allow these thoughts are coming from a seventy one year old man.
