Dolphin Slaughtering

Anybody aware of the Jappanese Dolphin slaughtering? I was unaware until a few weeks ago when my wife brought it to my attention along with the "Sea Shepard" activities trying to stop it. Nauseates me rather similarly to the issue with the slaughterhouse in Jersy that was closed in the other thread.

- Peter.

It's very cruel indeed...and the sheer number of dolphins that they slaughter is disturbing.

They also caught a rare albino that I beleive was sold off to a park or something. Between the whales hunts, shark finning and this I have a hard time with the Japanese.

They are an enigmatic people. I'm a big fan of Kurosawa movies, lot of intricate pathos and profundity there. But yeah, some of the other stuff, well . . .

Try this movie. The Cove Movie: Welcome
A few of my friends were principals in making it.

The Japanese 'fishing' methodology has been under fire for quite some time, yet they refuse to change their ways.
I don't impugn all Japanese for the actions of a few, but it is hard to comprehend how their population can allow such barbaric activity.

My wife has seen it. It's what alerted her to the barbarism. Many of her 7th graders have seen it as well in the ecology units she teaches. It's nauseating. Worse in my opinion than elephant slaughtering in Africa. There their is at - least theoretically - the issue of habitat encroachment and elephants occasionally overrunning human settlements and legitimate hunting profits can be used for conservation. This is simply nauseating.

I agree. My wife follows the activities of the Sea Shepards and their groups on line in practically real time. She has a hard time with it all.

They do eat them, despite the extremely high levels of mercury, cadmium, PCBs, dioxins and other heavy metals.
Often times it is mislabeled for sale as whale meat.

IIRC the locals have forbidden the meat being served in the schools.

I don't like it any more than you do but if you advocate firing a few torpedoes at the fishing boats, would you give someone who rams an inflatable boat into the USS Cole a pass since they no doubt find things we do disgusting? If we allow vigilante action because we think this one time, it is a good idea, how do you draw the line on that slippery slope? Who decides the next time? Who decides how far one can go? If you endorse harassment because you think this is a good cause, what happens when you don't? What happens today with the Sea Shepherd is liked by you. What about tomorrow when you don't like the reason for someone to harass you? If you support breaking a law to keep the "greater good", who decides whether this item is part of the greater good or not? It could become a huge mess when a militia decides what the greater good is and breaks and bends laws to get that good. As I said, allowing vigilantes besides on TV is going to get us on a slippery slope.

The numbers of slaughter dolphins is how many?

I think the reason people are disgusted is the simple fact that dolphins appear to be intelligent mammals and they are cute. Sharks fins being sliced off a live shark and the shark left to die did not gather attention nearly as quickly nor did it have the disgusting factor as sharks are not mammals nor are they cute. As a marine professional I don't like this dolphin kill, nor to I like the whale kills. Sea Shepard is universally disliked in the NGO world and is frequently a thorn in the side of all NGO's who are trying to improve bad practices of all humans which degrade our planet. SS torpedo'd a major environmental shark bill in Polynesia which took many years of work and planning because they wanted the lime light. They didn't get it and the bill went down in flames.

If you like the Federal govt coming into your community and telling you what to do, when to do it and how to do it then you can complain about the dolphin harvest. If you are in favor of smaller govt and local control then you have little grounds to stand on.

If you want to save ocean life and dolphins in general then stop the menhaden "fish oil" and "omega 3" industries. Menhaden (aka "bunker") are a food fish for nearly the entire oceanic life cycle of the east coast of the USA. The huge fleets which remove this base of the food pyramid end up causing far more damage to the ocean than a couple hundred or couple thousand dead dolphins.

Approximately 22000 just in Taiji alone.

Being in favor of small government has no relation to being opposed to systematic and inhumane slaughter of intelligent animals, no matter how hard you want to spin it that way.

We will never return to the days of isolation, it is a global community now, and one should not sit by and idly watch one's neighbor commit such acts.

What bill did SS screw the pooch on? Got a link?

Looks like French Polynesia and the Cook Islands both passed shark protection laws one year ago.

French Polynesia — a group of five major archipelagoes with more than 100 islands, including Tahiti — created the world’s largest shark sanctuary of 1.5 million square miles of sea on Dec. 6. The Cook Islands designated its own, which is equal to the size of Mexico at 756,000 square miles, on Dec. 19.

French Polynesia had established a moratorium on shark fishing and finning in 2006, but it exempted mako sharks to win over local fishing interests. More than 20 shark species, including hammerhead and thresher sharks, swim off its shores, according to the Pew Environment Group’s global shark conservation program director, Jill Hepp.

Tekau Frere, a technical adviser to French Polynesia’s environment minister, wrote in an e-mail that a permanent ban, which will now include makos, reflects sharks’ ecological, economic and cultural significance. Sharks, she wrote, “have a high value in Pacific Island cultures. . . . They are both respected and feared.”
