Kansas allows discrimination against Gays HB 2453

So Kansas decided to legalize religious discrimination against gays. The bill passed 72-49. The Senate is expected to pass the bill. Republican Gov will probably sign it into law.

Given that there is no protection for gays against discrimination (thank you US House Republicans) I wonder if there is a legal argument against this giant step backward.

I don't see any discrimination...I see Freedom of Religion and what religion holds dear and important. Since being gay is against most religions, I can see how you'd think this is discrimination...but there are some religions that will accept them, so they can go there instead.

A public business is allowed to deny service and you do not see discrimination? They cannot deny based on race, color, sex, ethnic origin and age but orientation is OK to discriminate against.

Sure, that makes sense. My religion says Christians are evil and I will not serve them. What if I am the only gas station in your town? Only Grocery store? Is that OK? What if my religion catches on and becomes the majority in the country? Still OK with it?

Wow this county went down the hole when Bush Jr got in office. Since when does religion rule our country? Its a joke. This country was not founded on religion, it was founded on freedom. You can do what you want with your crap religions, but this is bad.

Ditto.

The irony being that this law is giving special treatment to religious folk. Its saying, "Oh, your religion says gays are bad and you don't want to serve them, okay!". But if you are NOT religious and do the same, you will get in trouble.

Interesting.

edit: So much for seperation of church and state.

Would you support a law requiring a Muslim to do business with someone that deals with swine?

This is about freedom for all religions from being forced into doing things they don't support, at least that is what it appears to be.

One question at a time.

What special rights?

Not sure what you mean about a Muslim doing business with someone that deals with swine.

I think it is about legalized religious prejudice. Were it not for the Civil rights act you could substitute 'gay' with any other group of your choosing.

These so-called conservative legislators pass a law making their religious beliefs the official law of the land and then have the gall to claim to be standing up for religious freedom. I'll bet they claim to be in favor of small government as well and yet they insist that government direct how people live.

I'm sorry that gay Kansans have to put up with this foolishness, but there is a silver lining. The GOP is making itself less and less relevant.

This is exactly why they don't want a strong federal government evening the playing field for everybody's rights, they want pockets of Taliban duck resistance to flourish.

I think you are reading this proposed law wrong. If a gay person enters a restaurant, and somehow the employee or establishments knows or even thinks they guess is gay, they can refuse to serve.

So then the question is this. Would you be okay getting refused service because you are a known christian? So lets say I work at a business and refuse to serve you because you have a cross around your neck - you are okay with that?

That is exactly the thing. How can can freedom OF religion not necessarily include freedom from it?Any of them or all of them? For some reason you have to choose at least one? Because the from crowd is (still so far anyway) out numbered by they many particulars crowds who fear it will take away their right for special status, as well it should

Looks like you are correct.

As I read the document, it bars the GOVERNMENT from violating church doctrine = upholding the United States Constitution.

Logical, considering the extreme MILITANT actions of lunatics attempting to force their private SEX LIFE into everyones FACE, especially if it VIOLATES RELIGIOUS belief.
