I just found out the Israeli method Gat Goren costs 17000 euro plus transportation and is not currently offered in the US. I don't suppose Medicare will cover something out of the country will they?

When my father had the prostate procedure done about 10 years ago, he had two choices - TURP which is the electro-cautery method of reaming it out (not as horrible as it sounds, actually a very neat procedure) and another the name of which escapes me but it used microwaves to shrink back the tissue. Edit - TUMT

Both procedures had their drawbacks based on recovery time, I think the microwave procedure involved more frequent trips to the bathroom for a while and some incontinence management but since he has extreme mobility problems, dealing with this was not an option.

He chose the TURP because it just involved a catheter for a while while could be easily managed by someone else assisting him with the collection bag.

I believe for an otherwise healthy, mobile man, the microwave procedure would have been preferable. Dad is 83 now.

I just met with the local doc who I got by the luck of the draw through the ER. He prefers the TURP method but it will definitely have side effects that I prefer to avoid. I have scheduled the procedure to remove the stones next Wednesday. I will wait on the prostate reduction and see what other methods are available that might have less side effect.

They said the ultrasound method might be less destructive but it also doesn't last as long.

Urinary tract infection? Picked up one from the doctors examining room table at the hospital. Made me wonder if they had not sterilized the inspection equipment enough. Took a few days for the pills to really get it.

Urinary infections set in very fast. Twenty four hours after the examination it was already well established. I am not prone to get infections. Chills as well as periodic mental confusion. Only comfortable for a couple of days under a pile of blankets.

I'm better this morning but at 2 am I nearly upchucked but the valve at the top of the stomach just wouldn't open.

I will have to reschedule the shoulder doc exam again.... I don't see me making the four hour one way trip to Colombus OH.

With the possible problems on the prostate reduction I am tempted to ask him to just remove the stones and try using Flomax to reduce the prostate for now.

I just did some research on the prostate reduction options and none sound very good to me.
Tom, is your PSA normal?
A friend with prostate enlargement just had to have a prostate biopsy due to elevated PSA. His docs told him they needed to do the biopsy to rule out cancer before deciding what to do about the enlargement assuming it's benign. The biopsy sounds distinctly unpleasant.

Apparently the PSA offered no cause for concern.

So when the mrs took my temp around noon it was 103. We went to the ER. I have waves of feeiing better, then worse and my temp went from 100 to 103 several times while there.

They put in an iv antibiotic and prescribed a stronger one. The RN said I had a "raging infection" and that a high percentage of people with catheters start getting them after three days.

They don't know what bacteria it is yet. I hope its not one of those antibiotic resistant ones.

This is pretty consistant with my experience. The first antibiotics did not get it. So they really upped the dosage and length of application. It was severe enough that I too went to the Er that night instead of my family doctor or urolgist the next day. I did not bother my urologist but he later told me if ever again I acquired an infection like that he would directly administer anti biotics to the specific site of concern that was my right testicle as well. I thought how delightful and potentially uncomforatable to have done.

It was a learning experience of just how fast a blood born infection can accelerate. I even had some periodic mental issues from the infection. Hope you are feeling better soon. I think you will as this is pretty common occurance in the medical field.

They said my blood was clear but my urine was very cloudy...actually he said dirty. I was pretty miserable this morning with a temp of 101.4. Also nasaus and had dry heaves last night and again this morning. My temp crept down to 100.9 and I felt good enough to eat a berry smoothy. Then I slept for about an hour on the couch and now feel fairly better.

We're debating what to do now. My daughter the pediatrician says the Urologist's office should call and ask for the results of my lab from Wednesday. But I couldn't get them to they just said go to the ER.

This kind of thing is so common in the urology field I suspect. The urinary type infections advance very quickly compared to many others. If you are starting to feel a little better the anti biotics are probably starting to work.

They seem to take a couple of days to make much headway. These things are an experience worth missing. Large white oval horse pills are the standard treatment I believe. I just forgot the name of them.

I just took it again and its back up to 101.6 so I guess I'll be going in in hopes of getting some relief.
