Thought on driverless vehicles

All over the media lately. How long before they replace suicide bombers? $ vs. life.

I think once the bugs are ironed out it will be a good thing. Sure if it happens in my life time I will miss driving but I cannot see how it would not reduce traffic fatalities to at least near zero.

The plus side is you get in, program your destination, sit back, read a book, catch up on work or just take a nap. Sounds like a plan to me.

I reckon I'd feel about like I feel when in an airplane. Utterly powerless and out of control of my fate. It would take extra xanax just to go to the feed store. I'll pass.

Computers never age or err so what could go wrong?

There is something really disgusting in the possiblitly of kicking back, reading a good book, perhaps stopping to turn around and talk to your kids just a half second before doing a head-on with a semi.

I don't like it. People will still tend to drive beat up cars, past their prime. Vehicle inspections would be regular and lengthy. Not taking your car in for inspection would be a serious crime. There would need to be a major expanding of automobile bureaucracy.

Humans err but somehow I'm willing to trust myself more than a computer. I don't want to get overconfident but I've put in quite a few miles in me day - no fatalities, no injuries. Couple of low speed fender benders.

Considering the level of competence of most of our human drivers, can it really be any worse?

I say, invest in public transit instead. More bang for the buck.

Most definitely. I do not think this country looks long term and we are certainly not willing to make the investment.
