Most cars on the roadway are already effectively driverless, so it would be a big + imo, plus what a great benefit for being in a car and getting and/or being loaded!!!

I'd rather see autonomous over the road trucks. That is where this technology will really be useful. The trucks can run 24/7 with little to no downtime(regular maintenance and fueling).

So what about those of us who occasionally opt for two wheels? Will driverless cars actually see us?

Wow BAV, I had not even thought about that. Probably won't be much worse off than we currently are regarding not being seen.

Whenever we give up more control to the machines, I think about this:

In the NBC series "Hill Street Blues" . . . when the vending machine fails and the Sgt Esterhaus says "It must be human error" another detective walks by and says "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." and then the opening credits roll.

What will the legal driving age be? Can kids get to school in their own car? No more busses? What about commercial trucks? CA to Boston with no driver?

But my number one question is: what is a reboot like at hiway speed? Automated voice: "Rebooting, assume crash position."

I think it's pretty funny that the Google cars have to have rear view mirrors to comply with regs.

HAH!! Exactly right. Oh yeah, I'm ready to trust my life and anyone who rides in my car to a computer.

On a related note, did you know that in about 40 years, "they" are going to perfect sex robots? Won't be able to tell them from a real person. Male or female, take your pick. Will be able to do housework as well. I can hardly wait.

I suspect the same was said when cars and plqnes were introduced. How many would trust them over a horse and buggy? The car has improved just a little over the last 100 years or so. So has air travel. No reason to believe the same will not happen for automated ones.

I was told by a 777 pilot the thing can take off, fly and land with out him e en touching the controls.

Technology marches on.

But the pilot is still there. Why is that? 777's encounter some traffic preparing for takeoff and a little after landing but only a tiny fraction of what cars in a city encounter. There might be a problem of one car's operating system not dovetailing neatly with that of another car. Imagine a busy intersection. Are traffic lights used to meter the flow of traffic? Or does each car's computer somehow make the call? I can imagine there would be a weak signal transmitted at intersections so each car's computer will be prompted when that particular lane is ready to move. Or maybe the computer can read the lights with some sort of scanner?

I can easily imagine such scenarios might move at a snail's pace with driverless vehicles. Issues of which vehicle yields the right of way could be complicated.

What the hell will a backseat driver do in a driverless vehicle?
