Most cars on the roadway are already effectively driverless, so it would be a big + imo, plus what a great benefit for being in a car and getting and/or being loaded!!!

Drive in the greater Philadelphia metro area, and you'll see that beta testing of driverless vehicles is well underway...

I'd rather see autonomous over the road trucks. That is where this technology will really be useful. The trucks can run 24/7 with little to no downtime(regular maintenance and fueling).

Most definitely. I do not think this country looks long term and we are certainly not willing to make the investment.

So what about those of us who occasionally opt for two wheels? Will driverless cars actually see us?

Wow BAV, I had not even thought about that. Probably won't be much worse off than we currently are regarding not being seen.

Whenever we give up more control to the machines, I think about this:

In the NBC series "Hill Street Blues" . . . when the vending machine fails and the Sgt Esterhaus says "It must be human error" another detective walks by and says "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." and then the opening credits roll.

What will the legal driving age be? Can kids get to school in their own car? No more busses? What about commercial trucks? CA to Boston with no driver?
But my number one question is: what is a reboot like at hiway speed? Automated voice: "Rebooting, assume crash position." |

What the hell will a backseat driver do in a driverless vehicle?

There is something really disgusting in the possiblitly of kicking back, reading a good book, perhaps stopping to turn around and talk to your kids just a half second before doing a head-on with a semi. I don't like it. People will still tend to drive beat up cars, past their prime. Vehicle inspections would be regular and lengthy. Not taking your car in for inspection would be a serious crime. There would need to be a major expanding of automobile bureaucracy.
