It was satisfying to view; kind of like a short story.
Reminded me of the following, in a way.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ctin21yrfcA

Am I the only one that kinda cringed when he started the motor and it immediately revved to 2000-3000rpm until he moved the throttle linkage back ?

It was fun but I did not last until he got it started. That's a benz diesel though isn't it? Sit for 12 years outside and it still starts up.
If the weather had been warm the film would have been a lot shorter, I bet.

Yep, it's a 407d so the 616 engine. I'm not that surprised that the engine started but the fact that the van drove after sitting in a field like that for so long surprised me. I thought stuff would be rusted tight.

I don’t know bupkis about diesel engines but why would revving the engine right after startup be an unusual problem? I understand that generally this isn’t done with gassers until there has been time to build oil pressure, but there was more than enough time for that due to all the cranking before the engine started.

In my mind diesels and gassers are no different here - yeah, cranking will probably build up good oil pressure, (will it ? on such an old motor? who knows...)
...but either way, the oil is still cold, and large machinery customers go to great length to pre-heat oil and keep it at 180F +/- some - I see this and assume that the oil works better/lubricates/flows well to all the places it needs at operating temp. I just figure it better not to rev the carp out of an engine with cold oil (unless you have to...) There is a great response to this argument that says "revving the engine will warm the oil quicker and reducer overall wear", I cant deny this, I dont know which is indeed worse. Most common is "dont let it warm up in your driveway, just start and drive away normally" - probably the best middle-ground Also consider 1970's metallurgy/designs/production vs. today. I'm not sure. I'll at least let a motor idle for at least a few seconds before driving off... -John

I say 50/50
- maybe he saw that the linkage was 'advanced' a bit and didn't care. - Maybe he (like every other OM616 owner) knew that it would start quicker if he added fuel. - Maybe it surprised him and he got lucky when he pulled the linkage the correct direction in an effort to slow the motor, maybe he was that much of an OM616 wizard and it was intuitive... something else every 240D owner knows - you can slow the idle/kill the motor by manhandling the lever in the closed direction. We need to invite this dude to the forum and ask him (these earth-shattering questions directly -John
