I don't want it so much for porch pirates, as to know who is coming to the door to see if I want to get up. My home office is in my basement. The UPS guy and fedex person (we get a fedex lady at times) normally drop their parcel and ring the bell... then leave. But we also get solicitors despite the no-solicitation. If I know it's a solicitor, I can stay in my office.. If it's a delivery, I can leave it there until I have a call of nature and not make a special trip upstairs for an amazon envelope addresses to my wife |

I have the Arlo Pro. Have had the 3pack since Nov. I like.them. Rechargeable. Qiluick WiFi access. Free cloud storage on a 7 day rolling callendar. Night vision is adequate. Battery life depends on activity. I recharge the inside camera about ever week and a half. The outside one's ever few weeks.

Blink home security cameras?
I just installed an 8 camera Zosi with a 1 terabyte hard drive. Around 200 dollars, I already had a battery backup so I used it. They show great detail day or night and have programmable motion detection zones. Alerts my phone with a screenshot/ Time stamp.

Cameras work alright unless the guy comes up on your porch wearing sunglasses and a mexican sombrero.

Jumping through the hoops of putting cameras around my place.
Decided to go the route of getting network/POE cameras, was planning to run network drops to every room, figured adding a few extra drops for cameras wouldn't be a big deal. With that said, I don't trust them (engineered and built somewhere overseas) so they're going to be put into an isolated network with no internet access. I checked their traffic and they like to phone home... Not too much extra work for me, but something you guys should look into if you've got IP/network cameras at home.

I second on the possibility of interception of data.
These cameras use the internet to upload to "the cloud", that way you can receive real-time updates via your portable device(s). There is no way to know how much data is being transmitted up to the cloud. I placed my cameras outside of my house, looking at all the entrances - that way, hopefully, intruders can't enter my house without being captured on the Blink system, but once inside, my family and I (and any intruder[s]) cannot be filmed. A certain amount of privacy is important to me. Also, please consider the option to have a hard drive record on premises - but if intruder(s) know they are being recorded, they often steal the hard drive (or DVR) on their way out.

One of my clients has a large safe in a closet. Would take numerous men and equipment to move. The lock their computers in it during their numerous multi day absences.
Just a random thought, a hard drive such as you suggest in a safe hidden under junk in a basement closet, a safe bolted to concrete, might be a good way to go. Might even be some money in providing such a service.

yes, there is. I can tap all the traffic and t-filter it into a file locally if I choose, although storage for such a trace long term is very disk space intensive. I generally keep an eye on new devices I add or when major firmware updates occur. Being in IT security makes you paranoid about such things. All traffic to and from most of the 'dodgy' internet is blocked via our substantial firewall, which is a business grade device, not a home or soho type devices. |

I just watched the routing and saw it was connecting to an IP based in Asia... Didn't care what it sent, immediately decided it was going into an isolated network.

I have a Ring doorbell and love it. Don't know how much stuff is being sent overseas, but love the motion detection and visual/speech capacities of the front door on my iphone.
