Getting a salvage title in California walk through?

Can someone walk me through getting a salvage title in California?

Our car was totaled but is safe to drive after a new fender and headlight and wrestling with the bumper. The insurance check is cashed and I have a form from the insurance company that I have to take to the DMV within 10 days. Title is in my name. Yes, there are instructions online but whatís the word from those whoíve done this recently? Thanks!

I owned a CA salvage title Honda Accord a bit back. Car had been stolen and stripped(Nothing mechanical mostly interior and wheels). Never know it other than the title and low purchase price. Sold it years later to someone who had wanted to buy it when we did.(for the same amount)
Anyway I think the CA DMV site has a pretty good blurb but I'm sure you already researched. I see a lot of salvage title vehicles on CL.

You have to get the exterior lights checked if they all properly work. There are specific mechanics that can check this and they will give you a certificate it’s all good and if nothing is wrong, it will cost you around $100.

The first hiccup is the DMV said there’s no record of it being totaled so there’s nothing to do. The insurance company said they only report if they keep the car. Since I’m keeping it, I have to drive the process. It wasn’t a wasted trip since I got the scoop on what exactly I need, which is something I couldn’t find plainly enough stated for this simple brain.

The stack I’m taking to the DMV includes:

Form 488C application for salvage certificate
Form 343 application for title or registration
Form 256 statement of facts (that it’s my car to begin with, have title, no need for notary)
Form CL-30 total loss statement from insurance company
Estimate of record from insurance company (insurance says DMV will ask for this)
Smog certificate ($45 but it was due for coincidental renewal anyway)
Brake and light certificates ($100 like Jorn said!)
Title
Plates

CHP said certain cars have to be inspected by them but such isn’t the case with this car.

I’ll update the rest of the process and fees after the DMV inspection in a few days.

Second attempt, DMV won’t accept paperwork, won’t talk to insurance agent in my phone. I ran out of time so next is a DMV supervisor.

I should sell it as is without a marked title. If I do nothing, the DMV will never know it was salvaged. It’s like they don’t want to know. Who requests a salvage title for the heck of it?

The If you mean sell it without disclosing the salvage title, I meant to indicate that I’m kidding.

I got a DMV supervisor on the phone at 4:59pm. It’s the insurance’s responsibility to report the salvage. Now to get an insurance supervisor on the phone...
