I'm not a sailor. I'm a driver, I'd drive the boat, but I do not need to get there in a hurry.

I would anchor the boat in a marina and have to pay the fees of course, but I am at this point where I don't have much to do. So I would drive to the marina and park the car, get on the boat, go visit someone in St. Louis, and come back a week later, or something like that.

Eat **** and sleep. That's it right?
You might want to charter a boat similar to what you think you might like for an extended trip, get a feel for the whole thing.

You drive the boat, you become a "sailor". You will be responsible for navigating, making sure you don't run aground, safe passage through bad weather (the great lakes can be just like the open ocean, from what I understand), proper operation of the vessel, etc. It's a lot of responsibility. I would far prefer to just relax and let someone else take on all that responsibility. But I do it anyway out of necessity as I use my boats too often to make chartering worth it. 40' is a lot of boat - my biggest is 23' and I would not want to manage anything much larger than that, but that's just me.

Post Happy Dreams

Dreams are good, just go in with your eyes wipe open so it doesn't turn into a nightmare .

Owning a boat is like raising kids, it's a commitment. The difference is that when kids get older they move out. When boats get older they cost more....

Yeah, my #2 daughter just moved in with two of her lovely children. I love them but they are kindof noisy!

Post Adult Children

This can be a mixed bag .

I know many who's children moved home again 'temporarily' and didn't contribute any $ and quickly got lazy and continued the poor lifestyle choices that had made then get in dutch in the first place .

Hey Kuan. Long ago met with a Texan near corpus. He bought a barge, and put a double wide on it, with astro turf, and potted tree's. Anchored, between padre island and texas. Bad thing was the Bull Sharks at night.Alot of retires there doing same thing.

In part it depends on the size and type of boat. If it’s big enough to live on the the boat owns you. Don’t even think about owning a house and a boat. I love cruising sailboats. I owned a Westsail 32 which for two people would be perfect. The problem is I couldn’t find a wife that shared that opinion(I’ve tried more than once). I’ll never own a cruising sailboat again unless I’m living on it, have no other expenses, and the wife throws me out on my head. Now where’s my Yacht Broker magazine?

Drinking and boating is almost as bad of a plan as drinking and flying.
