Mercedes vs BMW ?

Why would anyone WASTE their hard earned money on a BMW ? BMWs are for ill informed YUPPIES . Just for fun though let s do compare . The ugly underpowered Z3 or Z4 vs the beautiful SL500 or SL600 ? No brainer ! How about sedans ? Say the boring 750il vs the S500 , S600 or even the CL430 ? Not even close . Road and Track said that as a whole , the entire BMW product line in 02 felt heavy and sluggish due to the weight vs horsepower / torque ratio and that maybe they were concentrating on fuel milage too much for cars in this price range . BMW drivers can contemplate their wasted money while watching the back of my Mercedes and sucking my dust . Please tell us your Mercedes vs BMW stories ! I know you all have some ...

wow... I just got an e-mail like that too!! I'll post up my reply here...

First off, I'm the black sheep of the family. I have a 78 450SL, and the rest have bimmers. As far as the choice, I believe that bmw has always been a driver's car. I think bmw has always had performance in mind compared to mercedes. You are comparing apples and oranges with the z3 and z4 vs. the sl500 and sl600. Comparing a 3L I6 vs a 6L V12??? Try a Z8 against a sl500. That's a 5L V8 vs a 5L V8. Personally, I think the Z8 is an awesome car with sleek styling. Second, you might want to recognize that all of bmw's cars (except the E32 745 that I don't think made it to the states) have been naturally aspirated, not supercharged like many of the smaller mercedes (C32, clk230, c230, slk230). Next, while comparing the 750IL w/the S500, you called it boring. I beg to differ. I've driven it, and it's a rocket! It has a 5.4L V12 matched to a 5 speed automatic. Judging by how you describe it, I'd conclude that you have never driven one. It has the interior luxuries that mercedes has (reclining rear seats, hand stitched leather dash, burlwood everywhere, etc.) but under the hood it has much more. If you compare engine power, the BMW has 326 bhp and the S500 weighs in at 302. The bmw handles amazingly, I can't talk about the S500 because I haven't driven one. As far as the price, for the price of a 750iL, you would only be able to get a S430. But luxury cars are for old people, let's look at the best of both worlds, the sports sedan. Big enough to seat 5, but powerfull enough to blow the pants off anyone on the streets. Lets talk about the E55 first. 5.5L V8 putting out 350bhp That's a rate of 65 hp/liter... not bad. It has a 5 speed auto (not very sporty), and it has 390 ft lbs of torque. The M5 on the other hand has a 5L V8 (.5L less), has 394 bhp (44 bhp more), and it's putting it out at a rate of 80bhp/liter. Along with that, it is matched up to a 6-speed stickshift, much more sporty and performance oriented. BMW has always been on top of naturally aspirated performance. Since you're an engineer, try looking at their new technology... the fully variable length intake runners, the double Vanoz, etc. Many new ideas are featured on the 745i. As far as power, look at the new M3... it's getting 103 bhp per liter without a turbo or supercharger. The only way mercedes can break teh 100bhp/liter mark is with the aid of a supercharger in their c32 AMG that's putting out 111bhp/liter, they're only getting 8bhp more even after force-feeding the engine! Now, mercedes is definitley a good luxury vehicle, but as far as performance is concerned, bmw wins hands down.

oh yeah... I forgot the OLD 2002 turbo... there were 2 bmw turbos.

Thanks Robert! Thought I was the only one getting shot at. Our friend is new here, and hopefully will eventually smooth out and "be one" with the rest of us.
We've had many BMW vs Benz "discussions" here. I'm convinced it stll comes down to personal preference. Soon as one gets a "better" car, the other comes out with one above that. That's how it seems to go in the car industry. I like alot about Bimmers, but prefer Benz's. Simple as that

BMW's are more sporty, benz is definately more luxurious and better built.

Maybe lately bmw has improved their interior, but previously, you were lucky if the interior wasn't falling apart.

Love the bmw engines, smooth, powerful and all. Styling is nice on the 3 and 5, 7 is just ugly to me.

Overall I'd take the better built mercedes over the sportier bmw.

I just prefer the feel of a benz.

I was going to get a 3 series coupe over my 300ce, until I drove them. the bmw's do not feel heavy to me, but rather light and unsafe in comparison to a benz that feels solid.

oh yeah... couple other things I must have missed in your e-mail to me... first off, last time I checked, BMW was winning most of R&T's reviews if they were included, in fact, I don't really remember any where they didn't win if they were included. Next, I am flattered that you would consider me an ill-informed yuppie, but I'm a 19 year old student that was spoiled with a 450SL. You must be talking about my dad. Finally, if you're talking about a 750iL sucking the dust of a 420 SEL or a 450 SLC, I hate to break it to you, but you are sadly mistaken, and I'd love to prove it to you anytime. E-mail me next time you're in san diego... I'd love to show you the power of a BMW, in fact it won't need to be from the 750, you can take your pic of the 735i, 535i, or 750iL. (don't pick the 535i... it's a little "modded")

yeah... he should try comparing the Z8 and the SL500... both have 5 liters, but one has 88bhp more... can you guess which one?

oh yeah... isn't the CL430 a coupe, or am I misinformed? Don't they only make CL500, CL600 and CL55???

It's not the subject matter, it's the jump-down-our-throat approach you took. Never mind. If you don't get it, you never will. I have thick skin and can't be "got". Just think about how you come on to people. It ain't neccesary to belittle people.
Thank you for your cooperation, and have a nice day:p

really let's be honest...

BMW has had Mercedes beat on the performance end of things from the beggining.

What put BMW on the map? PERFORMANCE
What put MB on the map? Quality, Durabilty, Luxury

BMW's fall apart faster, but they are more fun to drive. for some people BMW's are a better match, for others MB's are. i fell in love with BMWs when i first drove one, i had one at 16 and it was unbelievable! grant it, it was raggity and the benz we had of the same vintage looked a lot better for its age.

go here

www.bmwfilms.com

watch a few films and i think you'll get the point.

that's my opinion anyways
