I knew a guy who did car stereo competitions (before CAN and IASCA) and whenever he would be unhappy with a particular component (usually after the product warranty period), he would arrange to have his car "broken into"...then he would collect the money from the insurance company and purchase a new one.

The fact that access would be gained through the little "opera" window instead of the driver's side door glass should have attracted suspicion.

All I could think about was that the rest of us paid higher premiums for his antics!

Sad to hear when some of those "Urban Legends" are really true. What a moron!

That's one reason I rarely lock up my car. I'd rather they just take the stereo than bust up my car getting at it. So much for that idea!

Does the theory include the thesis that it all stems from working with Lucas electrics and SU carbs? :p

That's has all gotten me thinking, how does an insurence company value your loss if the car is stolen? Is it just book value? What about condition, upgrades, etc?

I don't know about values of what is stolen but one of my cousins who is a retired body shop owner in Florida always left the keys in his cars, said if it was ever stolen, less damage would likely be done to it. Most of what he had were worth way more than what he had in them.

That's a good idea, I have a Saab I'd love to see disappear, but I'm sure the thieves are too smart to bother...
