However given that you do not have a supercharger it sounds like a failing power steering pump from a 90's Ford. I have never heard that sound from a MB before.

I would remove the belt and run the car for a few seconds to see if the noise is still there. That will at least narrow it down to an internal engine issue or an accessory issue.
I second the power steering pump...I've had that sound from my '75 450sl...the steering box was leaking and the fluid in the PS pump had dropped down well below the appropriate level...barely covering the the filter in the pump. I filled the pump to the fill line and the whine went away.

I'm so stupid...

...I've just killed the engine.

I was checking the power steering pump - just replaced the fluid and filter - re-tightened the utility belt - started the engine and the noise was still there.

Walked back to the key to turn it off and the engine stalled after a loud click.

I knew exactly what it was => Broken camshaft

I've now worked out what I did wrong - I didn't re-set the chain tensioner correctly when I refitted it. I didn't RTFM properly.

Needless to say I'm pretty embarrassed about this.

More information about the tensioner is here =>

190 2.3 CAM broke after head gasket repaired!

As well as in the FSM

I'm a total plonker

Well I hope someone learns from my mistake

The hire car price (that I now need to take everyone on holiday) outstrips the cost of fixing the engine

Still it will keep me busy when I get back - I have something to look forward to

Have you considered something like this? I mean, you do refer to the car as a "pig dog".

DOGCARTS & LIONCARTS

p.s., I especially loved the text under the Lion Cart bit.

Nice one Mike - thanks for cheering me up - I'll have another day of kicking myself up the arse and then I'll move on.

I still can't believe that "Mr read the FSM" didn't read it properly himself. I was rushing to get the car back in one piece and missed a crucial crucial point

Just in case there's any confusion to what should have been done =>

Did you crunch the valves? One would think so elsewise why would the cam break? Oh no Mr Bill!!!

Off with its head... That's what happens when you rush. Other things happen when you take your time. Like when I changed my M116 timing chain the top end was exposed so long the cams rusted.

Yeah I should have taken a chill pill and not been so quick. Still I don't know how far I would have gotten on that head gasket - I'll never know now - but even so I've made it more expensive to fix. So far the best price for a new cam I've found is 170 euros. I think I'll start asking about the second hand places for a replacement head though - I just hope I haven't nadgered the pistons...

...new chain - new sprockets =>

Time for a M111 with supercharger transplant?
