I'm so stupid...
...I've just killed the engine.
I was checking the power steering pump - just replaced the fluid and filter - re-tightened the utility belt - started the engine and the noise was still there. Walked back to the key to turn it off and the engine stalled after a loud click. I knew exactly what it was => Broken camshaft I've now worked out what I did wrong - I didn't re-set the chain tensioner correctly when I refitted it. I didn't RTFM properly. Needless to say I'm pretty embarrassed about this. More information about the tensioner is here => 190 2.3 CAM broke after head gasket repaired! As well as in the FSM I'm a total plonker

Well I hope someone learns from my mistake
The hire car price (that I now need to take everyone on holiday) outstrips the cost of fixing the engine Still it will keep me busy when I get back - I have something to look forward to
