The only one I've worked to that level was a DOHC, and it was an interference engine. Quick glance online says pre '95 SOHC isn't... but all 2.5L are.

So long as you didn't force it, you might luck out. If a piston is at the top of the cylinder (two should be if you aligned cam marks before starting), you can force a valve into contact with it....

I really don't think my 240D would even free fall that fast... but I have seen a sustained 85 for a level stretch. Smooth as silk... and quiet as a blender full of bolts.
