I know this is going to sound silly, but does anyone have an engine stand brand they can recommend for an '83 240D engine? I borrowed one from a friend and the bell housing bolts are too short to fit...

I appreciate the response guys, I've gone ahead and cleaned the faces of the pistons off and the one i need to replace(no 4 cylinder) has a large 1 and 90,875 on it. If anyone has one, i'd pay you...

Spent the day disassembling my '83 240D that had bad blowby and low compression in the no. 4 cylinder.
The piston of said num 4 cylinder is a disaster. 2 bad ring lands. Looked like...

If it's the 12 point star, which my '83 616 uses, i found a set of 4 at pep boys for 15 bucks. It was on the bottom row and NOT next to all of the torx and allen type sockets. It's a Lisle brand tool...

Finally tore apart the 616 engine(1983 240D) with bad blow by. Found a nice gouge at the top of the cylinder sleeve. I'm replacing all sleeves and rings but can't find a source for piston...

yeah dud, i think ac compressor is what i'd look at first. are you running the ac? does the noise change if the ac clutch engages and disengages? mine made a racket till i replaced it.

dude it's your starter

Mine was doing the same when it was cold. didn't do it later in the day when it warmed up. (i live in florida). replaced the starter and the sound went away.
