W123 autos didnt have one. The 617 and m110 manuals had a damper.
But you'll lose a lot of that low end torque that helps you get up those ramps.

Why? the chain can't come off the sprockets if its allowed to go slack during repairs. Shortblocks are even shipped with the chain draped over the side.

The only real way to know its melting point for sure is to get a piston and put it in a kiln.
