I just learned that my '81 300D has a transmission out of a '84 or '85 500SEC, behind a 617. ??? motor.

While under the car I looked at the modulator It's RED. Is this correct? some sites I've go...

Also, the engine numbers are missing. The 617 are stamped clearly, but the rest of the stamping are is bare. I wire brushed it, and it does not look as if there were ever other numbers there.
