I have been having this consistent problem on my 86 300E. About 2 weeks ago my fuel distributor, fuel pump and fuel filter were replaced by a local mechanic who wasnt too good with Mercedes. Well now my car has absolutely no power, I am lucky if I can get the car to do 70mph and it takes a couple of minutes to get going that fast. Anyhow, I was wondering if there are any adjustments on the fuel distributor? I was wondering because I dont think the engine is getting enough fuel. I tried some fuel injector cleaner with no results. Also there is another part the mechanic said needed replacing its a relay type thing that plugs in right next to the fuel relay, it is red on top and it takes a standard 10amp fuse (not the regular mercedes fuses). What is this thing and what is its purpose. Thanks

This has bad vibes --
re: "...my fuel distributor, fuel pump and fuel filter were replaced by a local mechanic who wasnt too good with Mercedes...."
Well, I think I found the problem -- the mechanic. It will be almost impossible to trace all the possible (multiple) screw-ups he made.
Why would you need to replace BOTH the fuel distributor AND the fuel pump at the same time -- what are the odds that they both have gone bad at the same time? Was it guess work? I'm getting a feeling that that guy is going to milk you (i.e., your wallet) dry!!
re: "...its a relay type thing...it is red on top and it takes a standard 10amp fuse (not the regular mercedes fuses)...."
It's an overvoltage protection relay -- sort of like a surge protector for computers, as it protects the electronics from electrical surges. It could be part of your problem, but take it to an MB dealer to be sure.
Don't go back to that mechanic, unless you're going with your lawyer to serve papers on him!

Well the car was broken down for a few years and the fuel pump was pretty much shot, The car drove like a champ before it brokedown and I just didnt have the money to fix it. I thought just replacing the fuel pump would get it running but the mechanic told me the fuel distributor dried up or something along those lines. It emptied my wallet about 800$. That OVP, could that cause the problems I have been having? I replaced the fuse in it but it was real loose in there, when I would push down on the fuse the car would idle alittle faster until I let off of it.

It's been said that the OVP provides current to the fuel circuit. If the 10 amp fuse is/was loose and pushing on it altered the engine speed in any way, I'd be suspicious.

You might try searhcing the archives on this list, both current and for '99. Alot has been said about the problems created by faulty OVPs and the 10 amp fuse contained within.

True. So I took a couple apart and what I found was that the slots in the plastic case for the fuse tabs don't allow a good line-up with the tab recepticles inside the case.
This means possible poor contact of the fuse.
If the slots had been made larger, the fuse tabs would slide into the contacts for a better contact, but with the tight slots in the case , the fuse has no lee-way to find and slip into the female connector.
