The fuel tank has a sending unit that sends info to gauge. If the gauge reads most of the time but jumps at times then either the gauge or sending unit is defective

I am having the same problem with my '89 190E 2.6. I haven't had it fixed yet. Last time I was at the dealer, the tech seemed to think is was the sending unit. However, he came up with this solution without checking anything, just off the top of his head.

My fuel gauge kinda bounces around alittle when I get below half a tank, its not noticable unless you look closely at it. My sending unit is brand new so it must be somehwere else in the system.
