Question W140 Blower Motor Regulator woes~

I am afraid that it is time to replace the blower motor regulator on my beloved 1992 300SE. The blower sometimes works good, then would only blow slow, then would barely blow at all, and now it just doesnt do anything. I norrowed it down to the Regulator b/c the fan never mad a noise and the control panel is fine. I already ordered the blower regulator but now here is my problem..... WHERE IS THE DAMN THING! I can't seem to find it and Benz people I ask don't seem to know either. Someone told me that it is under the cowl in the front of the car where the windshield wiper motor is, while other people tell me it is behind the glove box............ Can anyone help me??

-A new evaporator, $2300.00
-A new 5-Speed Transmission, $5200.00
-New Close Assist Pump, $1200.00

-Bragging rights to a Mercedes W140.... PRICELE$$

Fan Regulator

You will need to remove the Pollen Filter top cover(in the engine bay),the pollen filter and there is your fan regulator. One of the reasons for this regulator to fail is high resistance in the fan motor itself due to water ingress. Have a good look at the fan motor it may be on its way out. When you re-assemble the filter and cover make sure of proper sealing. Good luck.

You didn't mention how long you've owned this car, but I suspect you'll find the cabin (pollen) filter willl be pretty dirty. When you take the cowling panel loose and remove the filter, you'll see that the regulator uses the air flow through the filter to help cool it. If the filter gets really dirty, the regulator fails from heat overload. Common problem on a W140.
When you install the new regulator (a very easy job), be sure to apply the heat conductive paste (will come with the regulator) to the bottom of the regulator when you screw it down. You'll probably find the new regulator has a bigger base plate than the original... again, to make the heat sink bigger.
While you're in there, you can check the brushes, etc on the blower motor.

Don't put the old filter back in... install a new one.

Hope this helps.

Remove the "big" screws that are visible on top of the plenum; on both sides and the middle. On the drivers side, there's another hose the attached to the plenum that needs to be removed. Then lift it up and out. You see a formed rubber drain hose that probably needs to be replaced since you'll find lots of "stuff" plugging it up!

Now may be a good time to replace the pre-filter. It's call that since theres another filter in the bowels of the car that's called the main filter. If it's the CHARCOAL treated version, there's a few more $$$; mine was but you can replace it with the non-charcoal version. The charcoal version works better but is considerably more expensive than the non-charcoal version.

So now that you can see the blower reg, use silicone paste to ensure adequate heat transfer to the blower motor case. The connectors just unplug and it's one of the easiest jobs you will ever do on that car.

It Works!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to say thank you to all of your replies!~ I replaced the regulator and the fan motor is blowing like she once did! I really love my 1992 300SE but she is quite the money pit. I know there will always be something to fix, but it is worth every penny- Every day she still turns heads and people compliment her beauty.

THANKS EVERYONE!!!!

Mike

Mike,
Glad it worked out for you. I see you're new here... welcome. As you've found, there's almost always someone who's willing to help. A great group.

Whether or not the W140's are a money pit or not can start a laborious discussion in this crowd.
But, there's no shortage of W140 supporters also... I own seven cars (counting my kids too), and my W140 coupe is the most reliable car I own and always bring pleasure when I drive it.

Best of luck.
